If I get textbooks and want to highlight stuff in them, can you usually still sell them back to the bookstore (obviously depends on the college, but in general)? I'm planning on keeping the books for my major, but might sell back some other ones. If I'd plan on selling a certain book back, then can I not write in it at all or barely write in it? In general, how 'used' are used books- is it worth getting them if I want to do my own highlighting of the information and keep them, or just get new? I like the feel of the new textbooks...I got new ones already for music theory and I like them- those I'm keeping, not selling back.

I sold back my history book with highlighting all the way through it. They didn’t even look inside of it. I don’t know how typical that is, but I got 50 bucks in cash for it so I’m not complaining.

If you want to buy new, buy new. If you want to highlight, highlight. You probably can sell back to the bookstore but it might be at a lower price. Used books come in a variety of conditions, at my bookstore you can look through the books to find one you’d want to buy. My English books were barely used but I bought my Spanish book ($80 new at bookstore) off a website for six dollars in horrible shape.

My school really only takes like new back.

Pro tip: Don’t highlight in your books. It devalues them WAY more than the highlighting will help your studying. It’s best to take notes from the book anyways rather than getting a false sense of security from highlighting.
