various questions about UMich

I'm currently a PA resident, who is seriously considering UMich (been accepted to LSA), but I have a few questions about the college that have been bugging me...
You don't have to answer every question. If you can just answer a few of them, that would be fine also (although I would prefer if I could get all the questions answered in some way or another :P)

1) What's the experience going to be like for an OOS student at UMich? Is it true that because of the very large campus, you rarely get to see people you know? I'm just afraid that it will be difficult for me to make new friends because there will be a lot of in-state students that will already have formed their own cliques by the time they enter the college. Overall, what is an average UMich student like? Friendly? Approachable? Arrogant? Shy?

2) I know UMich prides itself on diversity. Is the campus really as diverse as they say it is?

3) Are the GSIs really as bad as people say they are? I heard that your GPA at UMich is influenced greatly by the quality of the instructors you get. Due to the large lectures, and lack of English speaking GSIs, I suspect that the majority of your learning is going to be on your own? Or is this going to be the case in any large public university?

4) How competitive is it? I consider myself a typical average/above average HS student (top 5%, low 1300 SAT), so will the workload be difficult to keep up with? A lot of the profiles of the students that have been admitted to UMich from CC are rather intimidating O_O.

5) Since I'm OOS, the tuition is rather high...However, my parents have the money to pay for it if necessary. So even though I can afford it, is it worth all the money? Or should I just save the money and stick to an in-state school (my other option is UPitt, since I'm from PA)

6) I plan on going into pharmacy. Michigan obviously has a great grad school for pharmacy, but my question is: Is it easier to get into Michigan's pharmacy school if you go to Michigan for undergrad? I heard you can just apply directly into the pharmacy school after 2 years of undergrad, or something like that. Anyone care to enlighten me on this?

7) I know this last question may be a stretch, but if anyone is knowledgeable about the two colleges, would anyone be willing to compare UMich and UPitt? Keeping in mind that I plan on doing pharmacy.

thanks for anyone who replies

the experience for an OOS is going to be exactly the same as in-state; you’ll quickly make a ton of friends from living in the dorms, clubs, classes, etc. i’m in-state but most of my friends are OOS!

Umich is EXTREMELY diverse, perhaps more so than I’d like. the campus is filled with an eclectic mix of hippies, preppy east-coasters, sports fans, nerds (like me :] ), activists, and shy kids who hide out in the libraries. it’s also racially diverse, with a huge percentage of asians, and a lot of african-americans as well.

my experience with GSIs has been positive, although i’ve heard a few horror stories. but really, if you go to office hours and get to know them they’re fine. also, there’s tools like rate my professor so you know which ones to avoid. finally, you usually have to option of going to any discussion you want, or just change your section.

umich is extremely competitive in the business and engineering categories. less so in LSA, although there is a significant pre-med population bringing up the curve. if you study hard, you’ll make it.

this is a tough call. UM is definitely expensive OOS, but then again it may be worth it compared to Upitt…in terms of public schools you can’t really do any better.

I was prepharmacy before transferring to engineering. i would say it’s definitely easier to get in as a michigan undergrad. four of my friends here applied, and all four were accepted.

like i said, i don’t really know anything about Upitt. sorry!

hope this helps
