varsity cross country?

Hey, I will be a junior next year and am contemplating beginning cross country. But before I dedicate myself to this I want to set some realistic goals and be sure I am good enough. I have no knowledge about cross country at all, but I just like running and adventure which I heard is what cross country is all about.

So I was wondering, what is the average mile time to make j.v, varsity, and what is the average mile time of, lets say, a captain of a competitive team?

And exactly how many miles can I be expecting to run a week? Thank you!

Danny, go talk to the coach at your high school. XC practices usually start right after school is out for summer and the track season has ended. He’ll give you some training goals and an idea of what it would take for you to be competitive at your school.

I agree with RiverRunner, talking to the coach would be a good idea. “Average” times vary immensely from school to school, so what’s average at my school might be way faster or way slower than what’s average at your school.

One thing you can do is go to athletic.net and search for your school. Check out the XC times from last season and see where you would fit in. Top seven on the team are varsity.
