I'm a Junior and I'm not sure I can do both next year. I've always loved the French Language, I started it in 8th grade and took the AP Exam my Sophomore year ( I finished it early). If I wasn't set on becoming a screenwriter I might want to become a linguist/interpreter. Anyways, I am Secretary of both the French Club and Honor Society at my school, and it's been a decent year. We have elections for next year this week and I'm debating on whether I should run or not. I'm also in love with Rowing. I started it this year and I'm actually pretty good. My coach says that I'll be in his varsity boat this next year. Unfortunately, Crew requires a lot of time outside of school to train: 6 days a week, 3 hours a day. I'm not sure if I would be able to attend all my French Club meeting and officer meeting if I continued Crew, but I still love French Club. French Club meetings are occasional: two or three times a month, but just missing one day off crew would look really bad on my part and for the team. What should I do?

thanks

If I were you, I’d try to both, and if that doesn’t work, I’d drop the French Club. It’s only two or three times a month, so I’d drop that instead of your major Crew commitment. But, if French Club really means a lot to you, then I’d stick with French Club.

Talk to your coach about it and see if he’d be alright with you missing just a couple practices for an educational club in a language you’re good at and love. Tell him you’d really like to participate, but if he simply won’t allow the absences that you’ll forfeit the club for rowing (which, worse case scenario-- he says no --I think you should do). This should show him that you’re dedicated to his team.

I don’t think you should give up Rowing either way. If you give that up you’re ending up with two, three French meetings a month and a loooot of free time. If you give up French, you’re only missing out on those few meetings. Plus, sports give you possibility of trophies, championships, etc, that you probably wouldn’t have in a French club.

Try and do both if you sincerely love rowing and the French language.
