how good is the varsity team in Cornell, what are the factors you need to have inorder to play on those division 1 teams/??/? let's say Women's basketball...i really want to know..cause i want to play, but i am not extremely good.
need some help please

its d1. if you aren't that good you prob wouldn't get on as a walk on

Unless you are at least all-conference level, and in basketball, lacrosse, hockey, soccer, track, football, etc., have some statewide recognition, it is unlikely you can compete. In many sports, the Ivies are routinely top 20 in the nation. Football can be an exception because of the difficulty in finding sufficient student athletes but unless you were a star player on a good or excellent high school team, it is unlikely you could make the varsity squad.

Take a look at the women's basketball team at Cornell for example, and these three women are regular players, but not necessarily starters:

"At Wheeling Central Catholic Fitzsimmons is the all-time leading scorer, boys or girls, at Wheeling Central Catholic HS. She scored 1,831 points and averaged 21.7 points, 4.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per game as a senior. A first-team all-state, all-valley and all-league selection, Fitzsimmons was a four-year starter for Wheeling, leading her team to the state championship game in 2003, 2004 and 2005, while helping bring home the school's first Division A title in 2004."

"At Ben Davis Workman, an all-county, all-league and all-state athlete in Indiana, averaged 12 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in her senior campaign for Ben Davis HS. As a senior, Workman helped lead her team to a Section 12 championship, gaining an abundance of individual recognition along the way. She is a top 10 record holder in six different categories at Ben Davis (points, 3-pointers made, free-throws made, free-throw percentage, rebounds, assists)."

"At Martin Maduka was a McDonald's All-America team nominee while at Martin Senior HS and was ranked the No. 14 forward in the state of Texas by the Texas Roundball Association. Maduka was also a two-time first team all-district selection, an all-area selection as a junior, and was named to the Arlington Star Telegram Super Team as a senior."

Unless you have had similar success, you can forget about varsity basketball.

On the other hand, there are lots of intramural opportunities.

theres also club sports too

heh, our basketball team isn't as bad as Caltech's.

You need to be a serious athlete if you want to even think about playing college sports, especially division 1. If you "aren't that good" then you have no shot at playing college ball. There are plenty of intramural teams you can play on however.

umm, redcrimblue, have u ever been to a WBK game, because Maduka is def. a starting player, in fact one of the star players of the Cornell team. She was picked as the Ivy Rookie of the Year in 2006.

If you contact the coach by email now or visit them when you're here, some sports may still allow you to walk on and if they don't it's usually because their roster is full. Track always allows walkons and mostly everyone participates whether it is in a big or small meet.

The Ivy League sports are not great. Cornell track just got into the top 30. Ice Hockey is our biggest sport but even for that when was the last time we won NCAA Champs, that doesn't mean we're good, but Scholarship schools have the upperhand no doubt in sports. There are a lot of sports we aren't good in but you know if you're coming to an Ivy you are obviously more concerned with getting an education b/c you would have gone to another school for free if you wanted fulfillment in sports.

I'd say, for the threadstarter, email the women's BK coach she may even be looking for players. But if you really believe you are not D1 material, because these girls are good just not the best, try the club team

Track, Jeomi does not start. I think she should, and believe she is one of the best (and maybe the best) players in the Ivies. But for whatever reason she does not start and often rides the pine for half the game. She is, of course, also an exceptional trackster. I admire her for the ability to balance both those sports and school work.
