Is it completely required to do a varsity sport in high school? Currently I’m a junior and on jv girls tennis team and plan on doing track in the spring. I have a competitive girl in my class who keeps pressuring me to have a varsity sport unde my belt. I do other activists besides sports such as math league and math tutoring. Sports isn’t my #1 focus, but I don’t know if I’ll get into a competitive college just because I didn’t get a varsity sport until my senior year.
No, a varsity sport is not required in order to get involved in both your school and community (which is what colleges typically say they are looking for in extra-curriculars). A sport is not even required to gain admission into a “good” school (thank goodness).
Different people have different interests and should show their interests and passions in varying ways.
If you enjoy the sport you play and seek to play varsity for yourself (NOT because it will look good for colleges), then that’s what you should try to do. If not, it doesn’t matter.
Like @MissSuzyQ said, it is NOT required to do a varsity sport in high school. If you are doing it for an EC, you can pick any EC you want. It is better, in my opinion, to do something you really love. Colleges will understand that and so will other people. Hope I helped!
Have a good day!
@MissSuzyQ @anthonytheboy thank you both so much! Definitely helped me out!
The only colleges where a varsity sport is practically required is the Military Service Acadamies (e.g. West Point).
Colleges like to see that you have stuck with an EC for a while and that you have made progress. I am sure you will have opportunities in other clubs for leadership.
@college200015 You are welcome. If you ever need anything, please let me know!
Have a good day!
