So I was looking at the course guides and stuff and noticed that the same class might meet once or twice per week or for 2 hours or an hour and a half per week...am I misinterpreting something? How would students who take the class half as much obtain the same amount of credits?

The number of hours is usually the same.
Example. for intro to anthru one section meets thrice for one hour
and another section meets twice for one and half hours each.

Some classes only have lecture
Example 285 vs. 215 math classes
285 meets four times for one hour lecture
215 meets three times for lecture, one hour each, and another one hour for discussion/lab.

Generally credits tend to be more proportional to how much work they require outside of class than how much time you spend inside of it.
