Vascular Sonography... Is this the right forum?

Not med-school worthy by any means, but not sure which forum to jump on for discussion about about entering college to study Vascular Sonography (if I'm in the wrong place, someone please steer me in the right direction!!).

I am a 30 year old stay at home mom of 2 small children, who has finally realized that I have a burning desire to finish college. I have 28 credits from Penn State I earned right out of high school (1992) and really, really want to finish what I started. I have decided that I don't want to continue the original program and am serioulsy looking at our local community college that boasts it is the ONLY 2 year school that has an accredited program in Vascular Sonography. The college sells this by saying this field is "hot" and very high in demand... even saying that hospitals and clinics are literally waiting for students to graduate so they can fill open positions.

I am a little skeptical, because from what I've read on the net, the payscale is mediocre (25K-35K range to start). That doesn't add up, if the field is really that hot and in demand, especially if a little rural Northeast PA school is the only 2 year accredited school that offers this associates degree. Does anyone out there have any familiarity with this career, it's payscale, the job market, etc.? Actually anyone that has even heard of it... I'd love to hear from you. My first pick was/is the traditional ultrasound but those classes are given at night and I can't do that with small kiddos at home. My PLAN is to get my AS in both fields, which should be fairly easy once I get started in the vascular end of it.

I would love to hear from anyone about this, as I am flat out terrified to start this journey, but know it's something I HAVE to do.

Thanks~

Hi moop,

I found this site the other day, and I figured you’d appreciate a link to it… its all about cardiac sonography.

[Echocardiographer Jobs ? Cardiac Sonographer, Echo Tech, Echocardiography Technicians ? Echocardiographer.net](http://www.echocardiographer.net/)

Let me know if this helps you out at all.

There is also this new site that is focused on helping people CONSIDERING studying for a sonography(ultrasound technician) career. It’s here at UTSHQ. ([Ultrasound Technician Schools HQ - Your BEST resource for a career in Ultrasound](http://www.ultrasoundtechnicianschoolshq.■■■■■■■■■■)) If you are serious about making a decent living, working comfortable hours and being able to choose where you work, this may be a perfect career fit for you. Good luck with it.

Before you commit, pls talk to people in this arena, get the scoop. During a recent convo with a tech, she described all the challenges she and her colleagues face, with insurance restrictions, hospital cuts, contract companies and etc. I agree it sounds great- and she may have been alarmist. But try to learn as much as you can. Good luck.
