Essays: I liked my “Why Vassar” one (I didn’t do the common app) but it was just a paragraph, but it did talk about my background a bit in connection with the college–especially the ALANA center. And my personal statement essay? I actually sent them the WRONG, one. The less-edited version. It was terrible, I nearly creid when I realized what I had done…yet I still got in in.
Teacher Recs: Good? I didn’t read it, but I asked my English teacher to write one because I had had him for 3 years and I felt he knew me the best.
Counselor Rec: Good?
Interview: Didn’t have one.
Hook (if any): First generation college student, first generation American, Ethnicity I suppose.
State or Country: USA
School Type: large public
Ethnicity: Afro-Latin (West-Indian/Caribbean and Colombian)
Gender: Female
Legacy: Nah
Recruited Athlete & Sport: No.
Important ECs: Marching band (All Four years), Rugby (because it taught me a whole lot, some of which I wrote about), Best Buddies, NHS (through NHS is where I did/do most of my community service) Children’s Church/Vacation Bible School
Comments/Congratulations/etc: HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? My essay was a complete failure, I even spotted some mistakes in my “Why vassar.” My SAT scores are sort of a joke compared to everyone else. I really think my “My Space” (and possibley my ethnicity—which is a bit depressing) is what helped them decide, because I really liked my Myspace.

Accepted! So happy:) I am in a hurry so will post my stats later.
Can I ask u guys 1 question? I am an int’l student. How come my friends (undergrad, US natives) at UC,Berkely and Texas Austin have never heard of Vassar? And a professor at Stanford never heards of Amherst College as well. Is this quite common among US schools?

I wish I could answer this question for you. Frankly, a professor at Stanford who has never heard of Amherst? That’s pretty scary. Amherst is one of the top colleges in the country, and many people believe it provides as good an education as Stanford. I would assume that virtually everyone in academia has heard of it. As for your friends at Berkeley and UT Austin who haven’t heard of Vassar? Sometimes, people in other parts of the country (the US is pretty big!) haven’t heard of schools on the east coast, and vice versa. Many students choose to apply to schools “close to home.” However, I live on the east coast and certainly have familiarity with those two schools.
