Vassar College Class of 2014 Decisions

After the incident with the first thread, I thought I'd start this thread up again (it's really useful for future applicants wanting to get a sense of what this year's class looked like). When you post, remember to delete the spaces within the brackets so that your browser can process the code correctly (this is adapted from the littleatheist’s RD thread from last year).

It also touched on how my view of the school changed the first time I stepped foot on campus, and the open-curriculum, quidditch team, etc.
[] Your Space Entry: I wrote an investigation into the Big Bad Wolf and essentially proved him guilty of the crimes (I used the wolf’s side of the story, the kids book, as his testimony). It’s hard to explain, but it came out really well.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Vassar has a terrible relationship with my school because they think that we send them our “second tier” of applicants. The truth is that my school “combats grade deflation,” and even the best students don’t have above a 95 average. It’s quite unfortunate. I’ll likely be attending bard in the fall :)

Thanks bluewind for sending in your stats! I applied ED II and my brain is eating away at the thought of the letter which HASNT COME. And all this stress and agony might just be for nothing. I have a feeling I’ll get rejected. Or maybe I’ll get accepted I dunno! But I know you’ll get into a great college where you’ll show those Vassar admins what they missed. As for everyone else congratulations! You guys really deserve it!

no problem, mnoeus. i had actually already been accepted to bard early action, so i am completely fine with their decision, and will likely be at bard next fall!
congrats to everyone :)

Hey, guys. For some who have been accepted, you may know me from the facebook threat: I’m Chelsea. I have no idea why my username is the same as my silly 8th grade screen name, but ignore that. lol.

I’m basically posting this both so you can get a better understanding of who I am since I’ve been a lurker on vassar cc posts, lol & also bc I’m so shocked seeing all of your amazing resumes that I got accepted!

[ size=+2][ color=green][ b]Decision: ACCEPTED [ /b][ /color][ /size]

[ b]Stats:[ /b][ list]
[ *] SAT I (by section): CR: 690 M: 660 Wr: 740
[ *] SAT IIs: World History: 630 Math II: 680 (bc of a ridiculous curve btw, lol)
[ *] ACT: 31, 10/12 on the essay
[ *] APs: I’M TERRIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO AP TESTING IN MAY ! But I do get great grades in the actual classes, which matters more.
I’ve taken A.P. Global (3), A.P. U.S. (2), A.P. English Language (3) and taking A.P. Literature & Calculus this May.
[ *] IBs: –
[ *] GPA: 4.0, weighted.
[ *] Rank: No rank at my high school
[ *] Award(s): None at all!
[ *] Other stats: [ /list] Have taken 5 college courses at the college affiliated at my school, and took a rigorous senior year course load, which I bet helped.

[ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] ECs listed on app: Founder of Poetry Club in 12th grade, Environmental Club all 4 yrs. of high school (& secretary of,) National Honors Society member, Drama Club member for 4 years, editor of Poetry Corner in school newspaper, Woodland community environmental service in the spring my junior yr of highschool, journalism initiative internship junior yr
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Emilio’s Pizzeria, local pizzeria for 2 summers and then junior yr summer I took up an environmental collaborative job internship in which I restored hillsides along the Hudson River & took a Botany college course
[ *] Essays (subject and responses): Above all (after commending intelligence & a challenging course load, of course), Vassar appreciates quirkiness, creativity & unconventionality. I think my essay’s what did it, and not even because it was amazingly well written as it was clever. I made a mock diary entry to address how open I am with the public that I’d let anyone read my diary and how i opened the poetry club to have members express themselves.
vassar supp. essay was abt. my overnight stay, compared to other essays I’ve read on random sites, my essay was nothing compared to theirs ! But it was concise and well-written (only bc I edited it abt. a kagillion times, lol paranoia helps sometimes.)
[ *] Your Space Entry: Another thing that I believe helped make my application more appealing. Throughout my entire application, I basically showed that I am a writer and that I’ve always had a passion for writing in all of its forms. For the Your Space entry, I made a compilation of my writings through out the years , separated in 3 sections: My Past, My Present, & My Future.
For My Past, I literally sent them a raggedy, coffee-stained and terribly written little book I wrote when I was 4. It was cute though lol I wanted to show how I’ve always written and wanted to write. I also sent in a short poem I wrote when 10 and a random page of a book I wrote when 11.
My Present: a journalism article I wrote & a recent poem abt. my childhood
My Future: I printed out the Miscellany News cover and made a mock journalism article beginning w/ the title “Girl From the Bronx Anxiously Awaits Vassar Notification Letter” & wrote that I’d love to write for the Helicon & Miscellany News.
[ *] Teacher Recs: I didn’t see any, but one teacher I had for 2 yrs for English AND is the one who supervises my Poetry Club meetings, & the other, my Algebra II and A.P. Calculus teacher, is said to give great recommendations.
[ *] Counselor Rec: I saw the first sentence once while she was flipping through things on her computer…it looked good from that sentence. lol
[ *] Applied on: 12/28
[ *] Hook (if any): Passion for the school; I visited it 3 times (one time being the overnight visit), Yourspace section, unconventional college essay, & being from the Bronx? [ /list]

[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: [ /b] Bluewind330, as creepy as this may sound, I’ve seen your posts on the EDII thread and I now see your credentials here, and though Vassar didn’t accept you, you truly are amazing and good luck with Bard if you decide to go there! You’re ultimately going to be happy & really excel where ever it is you end up.
I’m blessed to have been recognized & accepted, still in shock, wish you all the best of luck, & can’t wait to meet those who have been accepted

and by facebook threat, I meant facebook thread.* lol, sorry about that.

What do you think when Vassar sent me an email saying I am in the admitted student pool? Does this mean I’m in?
I’m really confused.

cinderalla 0201: it means you’re rejected…

no, just kidding, it sounds like you’re in :)

Yeah, i was sorta surprised I got in here with my rather ehh ECs and no volunteer work. Especially the latter, I mean, I had literally none. Almost went here, but decided on Hamilton because I realized that Poughkeepsie is kinda a **** hole, and I’d rather be in the middle of nowhere. The only draws to Poughkeepsie are its relative closeness to NYC(where I’d maybe go once a semester), and that its near the Gunks(World Class Rock climbing). Aside from that, its possibly the ****tiest college town I’ve seen. Also, Vassar seemed a little bit liberal for me. I mean, I’m pretty liberal, both fiscally and socially, but I can respect some points made by the conservatives in terms of finance. But at Vassar, I felt like I was Glenn Beck compared to most the people there. To put it in perspective, there was an article in the school paper at one point which said the school store was encouraging gender stereotypes by selling pink razors.
