would it be possible for accepted kids to post stats? thanks!
Could you guys, regardless of decisions, please post your stats if you feel comfortable? It would really help out the ones who have yet to hear of their decisions. Thank you.
Sure Thing I was Accepted early decision and here are my stats… feel free to ask me any questions and the best of luck to all the current applicants!
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): Math 800, Critical Reading 720, Writing 640 (total 2160) (submitted)
[ *] ACT: Science: 25, English/ Critical reading: 28, math: 32 (29 overall) (submitted because I took my SAT’s in November and didn’t know how well I did on them before I submitted my application and sent in my ACT scores as a safeguard)
[ *] SAT II: Honestly did pretty bad… I ended up submitting my 600 on Literature and 700 on US History
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 3%, 8th out of about 280 students
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): Junior Year: AP US history (4) , AP language and composition (3)… Senior year: AP Psychology, AP Literature and Composition, AP Calculus AB, AP Studio Art ( I submitted an art portfolio with my application too), and AP Physics

Recognition (8th I think?) on the national Italian exam
Science fair: best in fair, 2nd in state, 5th in the school freshman year… and I did pretty well sophomore year too (3rd place at states) --> This started my fascination with the brain, my goal is to learn everything I possibly can about it
Various awards of excellence presented to me by the school… they were given to me in the subject of:
Contemporary painting, art III, advanced sculpture, and AP US history
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
CARES homework club (tutored children in elementary school)

Splash at MIT
Girl Scout senior leadership conference
math team (captain~ division champions every year)
french/ Italian club
[ *] Job/Work Experience:
Honestly I work a lot… In the summer I work almost full time juggling about 3 jobs: babysitting, Bussing, and dispatching (at a water park). It got really hard this summer because I had summer work for every class… but that didn’t stop me. During the school year my hour are spotty but typically I work 15-19 hours per week babysitting… Other past jobs include hostessing, working as an sales assistant at an art shop, and making balloon animals at fairs
I wrote a supplement essay about how everything I have, I earned through working. I bought my first car and my first laptop. I payed for myself to go on a trip to costa rica to study ecosystem diversity, and now I’m paying for myself to go on a class trip to California (for fun). I payed for my AP tests and other standardized testing. Each month I pay for my own insurance and gas… I think this supplement really helped
[ *] Volunteer/Community service:
other than what I’ve already listed… I also helped create a brief “how to paint a landscape” tutorial for children in Vietnam, I directed and helped with the painting of a few doors in my school (not just regular colors, but an actual painting of a man and a woman, a giant wave with galaxy behind it, and a gallery wall) and I did various volunteering with girl scouts (like organizing a dinner for the homeless)
[ *] Summer Activities:
other than working… I did homework I guess
[ *] Essays:
By far one of the best thing’s (if not the best) that I’ve written. I wrote about my childhood and my childlike curiosity with an anecdote from many years ago
I also wrote another essay explaining my circumstances… I wrote about some very personal thing that happened to me and my family and I think that gave the admission officers a good insight into the ups and downs of my life
Finally other than my work essay, I wrote about why I love vassar… some main points include it’s feminist roots and open curriculum (not to mention my gut feeling it was right)
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: all were good… I especially think my letter from the teacher who I got to help me implement Breaking Barriers was really powerful… that and my science teacher gave me a great letter
[ *] Counselor Rec: she didn’t really know me before… but in the end she wrote a pretty good letter
[ *] Interview: didn’t get one even though I signed up… there was no one in my area (but don’t worry, they are non-evaluative)
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Heck yes
[ *] Intended Major: Still trying to decide between Psychology, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science… leaning more towards cognitive science though
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): RI
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] Income Bracket: Uhm depends… I fluctuates in the middle class area for both parents but they are divorced
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths: My leadership and work experience… I honestly don’t think I would have been accepted if I hadn’t done half of what I did… Also my essay and recs really helped…
[ *] Weaknesses: my subject tests were HORRIBLE… and not to mention I never even touched sports in high school… I’ve never traveled abroad to volunteer to help others/ save children… I’ve never been the star of a drama production or anything really… I’m not musically talented… and honestly, I’m not that smart… The only reason I did well on my SAT’s was because I studied my butt off every weekend at a very long and tedious prep class I paid for (it was very expensive :/) and then I studied many hours more outside of that class)… In my regular school work its the same thing, I work hard for my grades… I’m not the type of student who can just flounce by without studying (I tried that once and I got a D on the test when I’ve gotten an A on every one before that). Every week freshman year, I was one of three students in my school to go to the tutoring (for english class) they provided for any struggling student… I think thats the only way I made my way up to AP english now. While my dedication may have been a strength, I feel as though my average intelligence was a downturn
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b]
My general advice is don’t freak out if you don’t have great test scores… I thought I would be dismissed on the spot for my subject tests but I wasn’t and that really goes to show they look at the whole application, not just one part. They want to see who you are, not who you tried to be so colleges would like you.The best thing you could do is find your passion and follow it… for me that was independence, art, and social justice.
I posted my stats because a few days ago I was a jumbled mess waiting to hear from Vassar… Vassar was the only school where all the details (big and small) fit together perfectly, and I know some students must feel that way too. Feel free to ask me any questions and good luck!
@BlueNerdBird Thank you for such an extensive stat! I wish you nothing but the best at Vassar! Your dedication and hard work shine through, and I really feel as though its the right fit for you and that you’ll excel. It’s an amazing institution, and you seem like a more than qualified applicant, who is going to help build a strong class of 2020. Good luck in all your endeavors!
@dinolove Oh it is my pleasure, I know how much I loved Vassar and how challenging the whole process was for me so I’m glad if I can help make the process a little easier for others. Also, thank you! you’re very kind
Accepted! I’m posting this because I know that when I was looking at kids’ stats from previous years, I knew that mine definitely didn’t match up, I felt like I could never get into a school like Vassar because I didn’t have a million AP’s or >2000 test scores
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 640 Math, 660 Reading, 670 Writing (1970 overall)

[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 11/220 (top 5%)

Extra-curricular: wrote about using my theatre background in multicultural club and doing theatre for social justice, not for personal gain
Vassar: wrote about my experience discovering the school (through tours), how it would help me grow as an artist and academically at the same time, talked about my impressions of the alumna/i I had met from Vassar
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: really good! I’m really close with the 3 teachers who recommended me, the one that I actually got to read was very personal
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes, lots
[ *] Intended Major: Anthro/Sociology, Drama
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): FL
[ *] School Type: arts magnet at a very poor public school
[ *] Ethnicity: white
[ *] Gender: male
[ *] Income Bracket: ~$60,000-$70,000
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): being a male is a bit of a hook it seems, at Vassar
Reflection
[ *] Strengths: Essays, extracurriculars, unweighted gpa, rec letters, Your Space, art supplements (dance, piano, vocal), being a male from FL?
[ *] Weaknesses: test scores (obviously), lack of AP classes, coming from a high school where virtually no one has ever attended a school like Vassar
General Comments:
a big part that I couldn’t express above was my demonstrated interest in Vassar. I visited last summer and asked to meet with my admissions counselor. She was really awesome and we kept in touch throughout fall. I visited again in November after I had turned my application in…I ran into her and we spoke again and she knew that I really wanted to be at this school. Vassar was the place that I truly wanted to be and I think that was evident in my application. I spent tons of time pouring over the common application and making it as personal as I could. I also made sure that I took every advantage to upload a resume, make a YourSpace, turn in art supplements, etc.
Anyway, I hope this helps the people who don’t have machine made stats or feel that parts of their application might be weak
@noundaries I felt the same way when looking at other peoples stats for Vassar too… Can’t wait to meet you on campus, you sound like a cool person
