The B.A. theatre program at Vassar is everything I've ever wanted in a college education.

I was wondering how much of a role that statistics (SAT, GPA, rank) play on admission to the theatre program. My test scores are solid, but I have an unweighted GPA of 3.4.

Besides my grades, I've expressed a consistent and intense passion for theatre throughout my high school career, and I'm aiming to explore the field of Applied Theatre (drama therapy, theatre education) in the future. My interests are wide-ranging and I especially have a keen interest in psychology, (particularly eating disorders in ethnic communities) and I'd love to continue to study the role that theatre can play in treating psychological disorders.

My passion for learning is intense and it shows through the activities that I've committed myself to throughout high school, but I understand that Vassar is a highly academic school. Are they known to look more holistically at applicants for the theatre department or is GPA the biggest determining factor is admission?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Good luck to you!

You should check the Vassar threads for general admissions information. Everything we’ve seen is that they do look holistically, but their academic requirements are very stringent.

My D applied this year, with a 3.6 UW and a 31 ACT, and she was rejected. I can’t say how she compared in terms of her ECs, her artistic merits, or her essays.

From what we learned by talking with an admissions officer, I really don’t think they accept students so much “into” a major, as they do into the school itself (not like at Northwestern, where they are channeling their applicants into the theatre program). But they do give a lot of opportunities to submit detailed descriptions of what you do, what you care about, really anything you want, in their “Your Space” section of the application.

I hope you have a great application process, to all of your schools. I would recommend that you find a few schools less academically selective than Vassar to round out your list.

Emmybet gave you great information and advice. I would add that when you are looking for additional schools, think about what you love about Vassar and look for those qualities in other schools. There are lots of great LACs with strong theater programs that could work for you. Good luck!
