Do you think that it is any easier for a boy to get into Vassar than a girl?

From the small sample size of my school, I would have to say yes. The only admits to Vassar I have heard from my high school were male and I know a few girls who were more qualified than me to attend Vassar from a pure numbers perspective. I don’t think it’s my intangibles or essay that got me admitted either because I felt like my essay was extremely weak. I actually have no idea why I was admitted so I just concluded that Vassar needed more guys to keep their gender balance moderate.

However, keep in mind that this is just my observations and one high school is an awfully small sample size to go by. Also, I have too little information about situation to actually truly believe in or endorse my conclusion. I by no means want to proclaim that Vassar’s admissions process is bias towards males or anything of that sort.

Vassar is split 58/42 I believe. If there is any bias, it probably isn’t large. That’s not a surprising ratio for a previously all-female LAC.

There is actually a pretty big difference between the percentage of boys and girls admitted just because so many girls apply each year.

For last year, 19% of girls were admitted and 33% of boys were admitted, with an overall acceptance rate of 24%. More in depth information can be found here:

Thank you for the replies: both anecdotal and statistical. My son is finishing his Junior Year so we have some time. But he LOVED Brown and Tufts which are so difficult to get into. His Guidance Counselor says he needs to find more target and safety schools. He loved Vassar also (although he didn’t expect to) But he thinks he only liked it because we saw it early. WE live less than an hour and half away so he will go visit again. Here are some of his stats:

SAT - CR 790, CM 670 CW 660
Global History SAT 2 - 790 (will take AM History next month)
American History AP -5
High Honor roll all quarters
GPA - 4.23 (out of 4 unweighted)
IB Diploma Candidate
Model UN ad Model Congress
Actor
Guitar player
Temple Youth Group
Tennis team
Destination Imagination

So I am hoping with that, great teacher recommendations and a good essay he can at least feel good about his chances in one of his top 3!

That’s great that he found schools that he loves already, it took me until the beginning of senior year for me. Also, he shouldn’t be overly worried about getting in to Tufts as it has almost the same admission statistics as Vassar and I would say that they are both match/high match schools for him based off of his stats. Brown, on the other hand, is an entirely different story as admission to ivy league schools the past few years have been incredibly competitive. But if you’re looking for a school to use as a safety, Vassar isn’t it. Does he know what he would like to major in? I might be able to recommend some schools that are similar to Vassar, although I don’t know much about Tufts so I won’t be able to help there.

Thank you. He wants to major in Political Science or Government. He has strong political ambitions right now. But we all know that can change. He loves History and is also interested in International Relations. But we all value a true Liberal Arts education
