Vassar Residential life?

What are freshmen dorms like? R they the same as every other school? Do you always live with someone else ur first three years? Any and all info is appreciated regarding residential life at Vassar

No freshmen dorms at all. Everybody is put into a house when they first arrive, and most people stay in that house for the first three years (you are allowed to change, but they put a lot of effort into the ‘house’ teams, and the vast majority of people stay put). Most people move into the on or just-off campus apartments / townhouses for senior year.

Virtually all 1st years have roommates, but it is not too hard to get a single in 2nd year, and by 3rd year it is easy enough. Depending on the house there are some suites as well.

Before she got to Vassar my D was sure that she was assigned to the worst room on the worst floor in the worst house, but by parent’s weekend (in October) she had decided that she really liked all 3, and that there was only one other house she would even think about living in! She has just chosen her room for 3rd year- still in that house.

@collegemom3717 you seem to be very helpful and very positive! My D decided on Vassar  Did your D pick her own room mate or let them do it? Did she select a “quiet” floor or Strong? If you select “quiet”, are you labeled “boring”?

Thanks, ILoveLabradors- I think you will find a lot of Vassar people who are that way

Mine let the college do it all- she was afraid that the Wellness floor would be boring, and she was coming from an all-girl school so she didn’t want Strong. Her Dad was a little uncomfortable about her being on a mixed floor- with mixed bathrooms! but at least in her house the bathroom set up is pretty good. The bathroom is a U shape. There are about half a dozen sinks in a row on the crosspiece of the U. Down one side of the U is a row of toilets, each in a separate cubicle with floor to ceiling walls and door- 100% enclosed. Down the other side of the U is a row of showers cubicles (there is a shower and a little changing area)- with floor to ceiling walls and door- 100% enclosed. So, really, it is just the walk to the bathroom and back. Although she grew up with only sisters, went to all-girls schools from grade 7 on, and went to an all-girls summer camp, she was completely comfortable.

Second year she stayed in the same building and chose the wellness floor- not b/c the other floors were bad, but b/c a bunch of her pals were there and it was a better layout than her floor (there was a suite option). Third year, same house and probably same floor (they are just doing room draws now). The townhouses (one of the senior options) are where the real partying happens (which is why my D says she wants the apartments, another senior option!).
