I was recently accepted to Vassar and was wondering if you enjoyed the experience, if it’s reputation was helpful for grad school/job placement, how other people reacted (though not too important) to your school? Basically your overall impression. Thanks
Did you get into BC? and from my school, Vassar is really difficult to get into.
Yea, I got into BC. Pretty excited about that too!
My D is a supremely happy 2nd year. She enjoys the people, her ECs, the various activities on campus and her classes.
She will be well ready for grad school when the time comes. In addition to course work advice, her advisor has been giving her info about when and how to plan for grad school, less-obvious career options in her field, etc. She did paid research at Vassar the summer after 1st year (the URSI program), which led to a publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and a trip to the national conference (paid for by Vassar) to present a poster on the research. For the summer after 2nd year she has a paid summer job doing research at UChicago lined up.
Definitely visit: like Tufts, it has it’s own ‘vibe’, which may or may not suit you- but if it suits you, it’s great.
I think Vassar is excellent in terms of grad school placement- my interviewer immediately went on to Columbia while her friends went on to places like Yale, Harvard etc.I would definitely attend Vassar
My son got into UPenn and Columbia for their medical physics programs and got a fully paid PHD offer from SUNY Stony Brook. He was a Physics major, so yes Vassar is great preparation for grad school. He choose UPenn.
Vassar prepared S1 well for attending a top engineering grad school as I have mentioned in other posts. He wore his Vassar gear at grad school all the time!
@borghugh , as the parent of a future physics major who was accepted to Vassar, I find your post really encouraging! How easy was it for your son to do research while at school?
@sudsie, my D is a physics major (see post above).
He did not do any research as he was more interested in the medical side of physics. He was a campus EMT and the medical equipment manager. He also became a NYS EMT. While at Vassar he was also accepted into the Dartmouth engineering program which is where you get a duo degree, a physics degree from Vassar and an engineering degree form Dartmouth, if you student is interested in that area. My son decided against it as he loved being on the Vassar campus. However they do have summer research programs for Physics
students, tell your student to get chummy with the professor he is interested in doing research with.
Thanks @collegemom3717 and @borghugh! We’ll be visiting on accepted students day…
A senior friend of mine is a physics major, plays a sport competitively, plays an instrument in the school’s orchestra and chamber music, and got into grad school for engineering at Cornell recently (keeping details vague to protect anonymity). People go to places like UPenn and Harvard for med school (and more) so it’s excellent at grad school placement. Personally, I know a few of my friends are planning on doing further research after school just because they’ve really enjoyed their time doing research here at Vassar.
Edit: I’ve just realized I’ve edited an year-old thread. Oops! Sorry.
@AkLvKk I am glad you brought this old thread to light. Perfect for those admitted Vassar students and their families who are now making college decisions! Very informative…
Vassar is fun and a gorgeous place to live for four years. Lots of activities to get involved in. Lots of different kinds of people. Food is pretty decent! Dorms are great. Traditions fun. And when you graduate it’s got a pretty posh reputation. It definitely helps open doors. Vassar connections are strong in lots of different career paths. Do an internship while there! Do at least one! Maybe two. Me and my sibling who went earlier both got great jobs right out of Vassar. The place my sib did an internship created a position for her. The thing is, too, her job usually requires grad school degree, but she just started right after Vassar. I got my position while doing junior year abroad and then when I returned home to US, Vassar alumni connected me with first USA job. I got full scholarships to Yale for two degrees afterwards. Vassar really can open doors. in so many ways.
Loved my time at Vassar (econ major) and it really prepared me well for grad school. Ended up getting into Johns Hopkins, Columbia, and the London School of Economics.
Me too. Great experience, great friends , great prep for grad school.
