Vassar supplement essay length

Hi fellas,

just wanted to ask if I can cross a characters limit for Vassar Supplement question "How did you learn about Vassar blahblahblah". Substantially, as there's only 500 characters... So am I supposed to stick to that limit even when I'm uploading a file or can I write an essay as long as 500 words or so?

Pretty sure attached essays don’t have to adhere to the 500 character limit, but I definitely wouldn’t go over one page. Mine is a little less than one page, single-spaced.

Yeah, mine is probably like a page and a half double-spaced. But I would say don’t worry too much about it. As long as your essay is sincere, it’s good. Vassar likes students who love Vassar.

Is it just me, or is 500 characters an extremely short essay? That’s half as long as the short answer in the common application… and that’s not very long at all. Are you guys sure that anything near 500 words would be acceptable, when that very probably is many times larger than the limit?

I emailed the admissions office about this same this same thing and they said anywhere from one paragraph to one page for the Why Vassar essay.

I submitted my essay thinking that the limit was 500 WORDS…
I hope this won’t affect my chances :/

I feel like a lot of people were confused and thought it was a limit of 500 words and not 500 characters.

Mine is 661 characters and 118 words long after I shortened it significantly. It’s just a paragraph really. Now I’m worried it’s too short even though it’s over the limit…

^^

My daughter, a freshman, submitted a “Why Vassar?” essay that was ~ 225 words.

Thank you CrewDad, that makes me feel better :)
