Vassar has a lot of qualities that interest me. Are there any current students who can speak to the open curriculum, location, anything? How competitive is admission, in terms of scores? On the Vassar board, it seemed to vary, but there's not a lot of action over there. Anything would be good.

I can tell you what I know. Admissions is very competitive, supposedly particularly for women. Students enjoy the open curriculum, and campus very much, but not so much the town of Poughkeepsie. Many rarely leave the "Vassar bubble" besides the occassional trip to "the city," to eat across the street from campus, to go to friend's dorms/housing across the street from the main bulk of campus, or traveling. Scores are expected to be high, but if you have everything else going for you very much, they will obviously give you leway.

There's lots of open space and historic buldings. It's a nice place, and many people enjoy it. The classes are generally small and the professors caring. Many students seem to be involved in many activities. Drug use seems fairly prevalent on campus, although if you don't want to, no one would ask you to or force you to. You should just be aware of its presence.

Thanks dRab. Now all I have to do is raise the scores a bit and bulk up the resume and hopefully I'll stand a chance. One more thing - financial aid? Do they do more of work-study or loans? I don't even know how much a decent loan is, meaning one I won't have to pay back for the rest of my life. Would a loan of about 10,000 a year be considered a good amount? Thanks again.

one more thing - does Vassar do interviews?

According to the info session we went to, Vassar does do interviews (not required), but will schedule them only after you apply.

Sorry, I don't know about the last couple questions.

jackson,
I would suggest that you consider posing some of your questions to the folks available in the "Vassar chat" options on their website http://admissions.vassar.edu/chat.html. You can talk to students, faculty, financial aid folks, etc. You might want to wait a little bit 'til the dust settles from the recent admissions activity, but I am sure you'll be able to get many questions answered there.

I loved Vassar when I was there, but that was a "few" years ago. You can also do a search of past discussions on the Vassar thread and find that many of these issues have been discussed. Hope this helps.

thanks jym. i think i will go ahead and check the site out. one of my friends is visiting vassar tomorrow (her top choice right now as well) and she also promised to tell me all about it.

Sure, happy to help jackson. Your friend is visiting campus at a beautiful time. It is gorgeous this time of year (though I heard something about snow in NY tomorrow.... hmmm.)
If is is a beautiful day, she'll see classes meeting out on the lawns, people throwing frisbees, people walking their dogs.... people sitting under trees reading.. the typical idyllic college life...

Aaaahhhhh......now I just want to go there even more.
