Hi, posted here a few times before about chances getting into UVA, now I have a question about the transfer process. Im in the process of getting my Associates in Science, and I was looking over the GAA agreement between VCCS and UVA, and I believe it said that you cannot use an AP credits towards your degree, but UVA would evaluate credits upon admission to the college, and give you appropriate credit. I just wanted to confirm whether or not this is true.

If it is, I'll be fairly confused, as they'll honor credit to those right out of high school with AP credit, but not those planning to transfer. What good will credit in the college do me, if I have already taken the class at TCC.

I’m not sure if this helps but, I transferred to UVA this semester from VCCS. However, I did NOT use the GAA. My AP credits counted for my A.S. but did not come with me to UVA. I was under the impression that they will take your AP credit if the scores are good enough, it’s just that you CAN’T use it to meet GAA requirements. In my case, the AP scores were not high enough to meet UVAs standards any way.

Yep. And also that UVA did NOT accept the AP credits. So I had 60ish credits but they only took 41. (Not related, but I also had military credit for PE and some ITE computer-related courses and UVA does not accept that stuff either!)

Hmm. Well I honestly wouldn’t be that upset if I had to retake some Biology, Social Science, or History at UVA. I can’t stand Tidewater Community College. I might go this route. Thank you!

You’re welcome. Yeah, I didn’t mind that they didn’t accept certain things. I mean I PREFER to be taking more class at a place like UVA and it left room to fit in everything I wanted for my major. Good luck! If you have any other transfer related questions and think I can help, let me know.

Well, I didn’t use the GAA, remember. I got an A.S. which doesn’t need foreign language. I ended up taking the placement test for Spanish and have a couple courses to take. It’s the only thing I am required to take outside of my major.

Hm. Well, im not versed in Spanish at all (took Japanese in HS, but not very fluent). So if I took a placement test, i’d likely do poorly. But, if UVA doesn’t really have a problem with me taking 100-level language courses, I don’t either. Thanks again.

Would have PM’ed, but I apparently don’t have that ability yet.

Yeah, they don’t have a problem with it. I took 5 years in high school, but without AP scores it didn’t count for anything. I place into 1060, which is like 101/102 condensed. If you started in “101” you would have to take 4 semesters.
