VCCS Transfer Student Question

Hi -

I've searched this forum looking for an answer but haven't come up with one yet. If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it - :)

I'm a second year VCCS student who would like to apply next Fall under the GAA (I'll be completing my AA this Spring). My English, Humanities, Social Sci's, Bio 101/102 & Non Western Perspective courses are all taken care of. (I'm taking the rest of French, History, etc. this year).

My main concern is this: with the Math courses, I know only VCCS Math 152 & above will transfer. However, I'm taking 151 this Fall to prepare myself for 152 in the Spring. That doesn't leave me a lot of time to take another Math under the GAA (my math skills are abysmal). I preemptively contacted a UVA admissions counselor via email & I asked her if according to the GAA if I could take Math 152 plus another science this Spring (to fulfill the Natural Sci & Math, 12 credits requirement) & she said yes. I definitely want to believe her but I have received so much conflicting advice from VCCS transfer counselors here at NVCC & transfer students recently admitted into UVA that I just don't know what to believe. Does anyone here have any experience being or knowing a VCCS GAA student?

I would prefer to apply under the GAA, but outside of that I have a 3.9, am in the honors program, am employed part time at our Writing Center & have extra curriculars. If I came up a course short for the GAA would I still be competitive as an in-state person?

Thanks so much in advance for any advice:)

PS - Congratulations to everyone who got in! yay:)

you need 12 hours math and science combined, so 1 math class (3 credits) and 9 credits in sciences is 100% acceptable, as is no math classes and 1 or more classes in two different sciences (chem and bio for example).

reading through http://www.vccs.edu/Portals/0/ContentAreas/Transfer/uva.pdf</a> it says exactly what i said. who do you know who it didn’t count for??

Drop 151.

They do not build on each other and taking 151 serves little purpose. I’d recommend taking another math course like 152 or Statistics that will meet the college requirements.

Hazelorb: Thanks for the response. Your replies always seem so helpful. I have read the agreement & it’s definitely in line w/ what the UVA counselor told me…my apprehension came from the UVA transfer counselor here saying I’d be set w/ just Bio101/102 & Math 151/152…I don’t think so b/c that 151 would be going nowhere. As far as knowing someone else, my friend’s friend got into UVA (just not under the GAA) & said that he thought it would work w/ the 3 Sci’s & 1 Math, but he couldn’t apply under GAA. Maybe he was missing something else, though.

As far as not taking 151, I know that makes the most sense. My math skills are REALLY bad though. I’ve been out of HS for a minute & 151 was the best I could score into.

If I do get in under the GAA w/ 3 Sci’s & a Math is there more Math going to be waiting for me at UVA? That scares me.

Thank you for the replies!

nope, many people here take no math at all (just the 2 science combo i previously described).

152 includes a unit on Statistics. If you can manage 152 you can do a full term of it.

Best luck,

Hazelorb & Eliot:

Thank you for your responses - I feel much less stressed out now…

Absolutely, don’t worry. Just focus on doing well

I transferred as a second year with the following courses.

Biology 101

Economics 201 Macroeconomics

English 111
English 112 Honors
English 279 Film and Literature

History 101 Western Civ
History 102 Western Civ
History 252 The Modern Middle East
History 267 The Second World War

Math 151
Math 152

PLS 211 US Government

Everything transferred but some like 151 were recognized as electives and could not be used to meet core requirements.
