VCU Dance

Just thought I’d start a thread on VCU dance so we can stop hijacking the Point Park thread.

My dd has submitted her academic application and will be auditioning in November. We don’t know that much about the program but many people who know her well have said they think it will be a good fit for her. It’s also a kind of ideal distance from home as far as we’re concerned.

Anyone else at yesterday’s audition? My dd loved it and may have moved VCU up to her #1 choice.

My D auditions in February, but if your D is the competition she’s probably out of luck! Ha ha ha! Seriously, I’m glad she liked it so much! Considering how close we live to Richmond it’s crazy to say we’ve never been (except to drive though).

LOL I don’t know about that. We are OOS, so some good aid would need to come through for it to be a viable option.

@threegirlpileup I am so happy to hear that your daughter enjoyed her audition/visit. I was sad when my daughter did not follow through with her application/audition. Purely to satisfy my curiosity, what did your daughter love? I am guessing it had enough of a choreography piece and that made her happy too?

Definitely one of the big draws was the dual emphasis on the technique and creative tracks. Of all the schools we have visited so far, it seemed to have the best balance of these, not sacrificing the rigor of one for the other.

She loved the Friday workshop class that we observed, which was all of the majors taking class together. She was impressed with the quality of the dancers as well as the positivity and encouragement and energy in the room. We both loved the way that the dancers talked about the program and the faculty–with a lot of love. It seems like a very open-hearted program.

All in all, she felt like it balanced the things she was looking for well–both creative and technique training, and a program that would be both challenging and supportive.

@threegirlpileup It is so nice when you find a great fit in a program. With your review I feel like I can recommend it to other dancers looking for that choreo component.

This morning D pulled her app from VCU and canceled her audition. It’s just too competitive for her and she’s not looking to rack up another rejection. She’s happy with the acceptances she has, worried about the top choices she hasn’t heard from, and excited for the last few auditions scheduled now. Even taking that one off the board was a huge relief for her.

@milgymfam I don’t blame you! My dd decided to decline her academic admission to Marymount Manhattan and forego the audition. It seems both very competitive and a bit capricious, and she already has other choices that seem like a better fit. She also decided to withdraw her application from Hofstra, since she already has some good options. It’s such a relief to cross two more schools (and two more auditions) off the list.

Did your daughter hear back from the dance audition yet? We haven’t heard from the dance audition (Nov 22) or the school for admission. I know there was a “glitch” in admission with the portal or whatever. Thought we’d hear back from the audition by now.

My daughter got her academic acceptance about a week ago, which listed her major as dance–but we assumed that was still pending her acceptance into the dance program, since we hadn’t heard from them yet. Realizing this week that it had been over three weeks since her audition (and they had said 2 weeks, maybe 3 for a decision), I wondered if maybe the acceptance was for both? So I called admissions and was bounced around until I landed at VCUArts admissions. Since I had an acceptance letter that listed dance as her major, they told me over the phone that she had been admitted to the dance program. But it sounded like they hadn’t actually sent out dance admissions yet–they said we should look for it in the mail, but nothing there or via email so far.

@threegirlpileup some of the mothers I befriended at the audition said their daughters got letters in mail today. They live in Virginia. My guess is ours will come any day now.

@threegirlpileup and @czgator thanks. I guess we’ll keep hanging tight. I want to call but my daughter doesn’t want me to, lol. Good luck to everyone!

We are in NC and the packet from VCUArts arrived today.

My daughter’s packet arrived today in Texas

Has anyone heard anything about merit aid? We’re hopeful based on what dd has gotten from other schools, but VCU seems very slow. We’ll need $$ to be able to give the school serious consideration.
