VCU Honors and Biomed Engineering

Just a few days ago I received an acceptance letter from VCU for biomedical engineering. In the letter towards the bottom it made a brief mention about the Honors College. Does that mean that I got into Honors because I never applied for it. I called VCU and they said I was in Honors, but I'm still confused as to how I got in when I didn't apply and my SAT scores were below the 1910. I did have an excellent gpa and other activities, but I'm just shocked I guess. Getting into Honors is huge because I get to stay in the Honors dorms which are very nice. So I guess I am just wondering if things like this happen, or if I'm just wrong? I also was curious as to whether which biomedical engineering program is better, UVa's or VCU's? I know that 94% of biomed students at VCU go off into med school which is what I want to do as well, but is it better than going to UVA? The whole point is to take the road to med school that is the least hardest and most informative. Is that UVA or VCU? I like both colleges, but I want to make a wise choice in terms of my future.

Thank you for taking to time!

My son is attending VCU in the fall for BME. We went to the open house back in Feb and was very impressed with the info we received. We liked the fact that the entire degree is at VCU and he will not have to switch to another campus. Hospital rounds first semester at VCU sounds pretty neat, especially if your intention is Med School.

Have you heard anything about scholarships?

Yeah I don’t know how you got in to Honors without applying…its kind of a weird process with two extra letters of reccomendations and supposedly they’re pretty strict about GPA and SAT scores. According to this thread:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/engineering-majors/172472-latest-biomedical-engineering-rankings-3.html</a>
UVA is number 16, and VCU does not appear in the top 50.

I think I just mis-read the letter. Regardless, I will find out April 2nd at the biomedical engineering orientation. I have not yet found out about scholarships because I just got my acceptance letter last Friday. So I think I’m going to have to wait a couple days before it comes.

My son applied by the December 1 deadline for scholarship consideration. He found out in early Jan. that he was accepted to the business school. Then he filled out the Honors college app and sent it by the Feb. 1 priority deadline. He found out within 10 days that he was accepted. A couple of weeks later he received the scholarship packet. All in all a very efficient process!

Just another piece of info regarding the honors program…nice dorm rooms! A friend of mine’s son took advantage of the honors program at VCU (he is going into biology/science/research…something in those fields) and has been in a very nice single dorm room all the way through. Loves it.

P.S. Go Rams! Final Four! :)

Correction on the 94% of VCU BME grads going to med school.

Approximately half of the BME grads choose to attend medical or dental school with a 94% acceptance rate. A quarter choose grad school with a 100% acceptance rate and the remaining 25% go into the job market.

Getting accepted to UVA with <1910 SAT isn’t likely, unless you have some kind of hook.

It might also be worth it to investigate the “weeding out” process for BME, if there is one. Sometimes the grad/med placement rates can look very high, but it’s because so many students were weeded out with poor grades or counseled into different majors.

For those of you who got accepted to VCU Honors, how strict are thy about the 3.5 GPA requirement? I have a 33 ACT and 2230 SAT, but a 3.4 UW GPA. What are my chances?

I didnt even know VCU had a GPA requirement. Plenty of students from my kids’ two in-state high schools get in with under 3.0. With your test scores, you will have no problem whatsoever. But maybe you should be reaching a bit higher??

I was specifically interested in the Honors program at VCU. They do have a GPA requirement.

Ok, that makes more sense :). And I think they would use your weighted GPA. That’s what most schools do.

Again, I am told they ONLY look at UW GPA…:(

Wow, that makes no sense whatsoever. Sorry can’t help, don’t have any experience with VCU honors. But from what I’ve read and heard, unless you want Arts, VCU isn’t usually a first-choice school. It is cheap though, so there’s that.

You could always call and ask the Honors program. However, I am pretty sure that they do not budge as most places do not budge on honors requirements.

Also, 3.5 is the minimum to be considered, that wouldn’t even guarantee honors admission. A plan might be to apply and enroll as normal and earn a 3.6 while a VCU student. Then you will be able to apply to the honors college as a current student.
