VCU or GMU for Business Major

I heard both schools have good business programs, but I'm not sure which one is the better decision.

Look at the recruiting and job placements at each school and then decide.

Also what are you looking to study?

VCU’s Business School has a pretty high profile here in the Richmond area. I know a lot of pretty successful people my age (creeping toward retirement) who went there years ago. A friend was just lecturing me on why my son should consider it next year. On the other hand GMU has a rising reputation and you can be in downtown D.C. in 20 minutes. To me that means great internship opportunities. I’m a little concerned that GMU has the reputation of being a commuter school; that the campus clears out over the weekends. I think what scirencenerd suggests is good; look at job placement. Have you been accepted at both?

I think that commuter school image at GMU is starting to change My son was just accepted & it’s one of his top choices. I think there is a new dorm opening in the fall and I know a lot of students from here in the tidewater area of the state who live on campus and love the school. They do have a high job placement rate because of the location. I’m from Richmond & attended grad school at VCU. I think VCU is better then it was in my day but if you look at the inner city location, it’s not ideal on safety.

bksfan, Yes, as a parent I was leaning toward GMU which I perceive as safer. As a student I loved downtown Richmond though. It is not “inner city.” It’s some of the more expensive real estate in Richmond. It’s “downtown.” I know their newish campus police chief and he has made some innovative changes to campus safety. Ultimately it’s my son’s decision next year though.

GMU has a reputation for nice dorms already, bksfan. Your son will love it if it’s top choice. Congrats to him!

I was looking at VCU’s merit aid and my son has scores and grades that would probably qualify for merit aid. I think he’d get it at GMU also but it’s not really a requirement for us.

I just went off on a VCU odyssey because I had really never looked at their business school. I found an outcome table on the Business School Career Services page. 94% of the Spring '13 Graduate School graduates employed in their field:
http://business.vcu.edu/career/3626.html

I’ve been accepted at George Mason and I haven’t heard yet from VCU. Also, I’m looking to study Arts Management.

@OspreyCV22‌, my kid loves VCU’s location & is waiting to hear from them too but & of course the final say will belong to him. I lived in the Fan & took my bike to classes “back in the day” :). I checked, I think it was Niche, & VCU, despite it’s improvements, is still listed in term of safety, dead last on the list. That is really my number one concern with the school. Otherwise, it’s a diverse school with good job prospects for the students. Over here, VT is also on the plate.

@taylzrock13, this is an MBA forum and I think you are looking at undergraduate business and there is a forum for business major under the College Major forum
