vcu vs gmu for biomedical engineering

I have been accepted to both schools honors programs. Which one would be better for studying biomedical engineering?

It depends on you. Both schools are very different.

@undercover007 What makes VCU’s bme program unique or what are the advantages of choosing VCU for bme?

Our son is looking at VCU for their BME program. We were very impressed when we visited in November. Like the fact that the program is coordinated with the Medical Center too. GMU only received their accrediation for BME in 2011, so it is a newer program.

You need to determine what you want to do with your BME degree–are you going on to grad school? med school?

Right now I am planning to study BME/premed. I am planning on going to the bioengineering dept event to truly understand VCU’s program. I was also going to participate in the honors program. I live close to GMU but if I attend VCU I will need to live in the dorm. By attending GMU I would be saving tuition by living at home. This would be helpful since I will need to go to graduate school.

If money is a motivating factor then GMU sound to be the best economic option then. However, that aside I think you’ll know better once you visit both schools and see which one “feels” better.

I attended the gmu bioengineering orientation and found the program to be too new and not to well established.
Looking forward to the VCU bme orientation.

Anyone else have thoughts on VCU’s bme program?

Some quick facts on VCU’s BME program that might interest you. Half of the BME majors are Pre-Med, and they have a 94% acceptance rate to Med/Dental School. 25% of the BME majors go onto to grad school–with a 100% acceptance rate (and 90% are fully funded too).

I actually just spoke to the head of the BME department today too. He said they usually have 60 to 70 students in the incoming class. Only 2 or 3 drop the program in four years. Half of them are in the honors program and doing research. They also seem to have nice research labs and are affiliated with the medical center. He also said that some of the students go to graduate school fully funded if they are not going to med school.
