Hi there, everyone! :)
I'm going to be an incoming freshman into Newhouse this fall, and I was wondering if any current or past students, or perhaps their family or friends have any experience to share with me about what the veg fare is like in Syracuse dining halls.

I was a vegetarian for two years, taking a two year omnivorous break and was vegan for six months, ending that lifestyle in March due to extensive traveling and not wanting to be a burden.

While meat and dairy don't make me sick to my stomach, I generally feel better overall on a vegan diet.

I visited the campus over Spring Break and am well aware of the vegan options in nearby establishments and know that their online menu lists vegan options, but I simply want to know about their quality. Would I be starving every night and just plain ol' miserable?

Thanks in advance!

First of all, welcome to SU!

I actually have a friend who’s vegetarian and more often than not, she ends up just eating salad and dessert. There seem to be few veg options, and she seems to not like eating most of them. When I look at the veg line, most of the options available are generally untouched, and whatever she ends up getting is typically cold and somewhat gross from being out too long.

My daughter is a vegetarian…rising junior at Syracuse. The lack of decent vegetarian food (or any decent food, for that matter) is one of her biggest complaints about the school. And her friends who are not vegetarian echo her complaints. Even off campus, there is limited choice within walking distance of the campus. There isn’t even a convenient supermarket. The nearest great market, Wegman’s, requires a car. But there is some hope, since some entrepreneurial students have begun a scheduled bus service to Wegman’s on weekends.

My girlfriend was a vegetarian @ syr. My recollection is that in the dining hall freshman year she was ok, but it wasn’t great. The remaining three years she had an apartment on south campus with a kitchen, so she drove to Wegman’s and cooked for herself (as did her very carnivorous roommate).
