My S, a high school junior, became a vegetarian this year. He has Grinnell on his short list of potential colleges. What kind of food options (in particular vegetarian fare) are available at Grinnell? And what do students think of the meals served on campus?

Thanks!

There is a vegan bar there. And like soy milk and stuff. Pretty good options. Food court is decent if not great.

S is a vegetarian of long standing (I blame Charlotte’s Web). He says the food is great-lots of options. His ‘beef’ is that there aren’t a lot of great restaurants in a town of 9,000for vegetarians. Of course, he also grew up in a major metro area, so he’s used to having lots of choices.

Having eaten at the student center many times, I’d say there are lots of options for vegetarians, but I’ll bet some students complain. There’s a salad bar, pasta bar, stir fry station, etc. My son mostly says the desserts aren’t so great. So I send him care packages and make him pie when he’s home. In general, the food gets high marks.

My daughter is a junior and a vegetarian. She really has enjoyed the food in the dining hall, the vegan options have really expanded the variety of items she will actually eat. She is pretty picky and I hear no complaints…and believe me, she would complain! :)
