I heard from a few friends that went to see the school that there is very limited choice for vegetarians at Cal Poly SLO. Although I never considered food to be a deciding factor in choosing a college, I now realize their importance. Does anyone know if there will be many vegetarian options for me in campus or around campus? Thank you

I would suggest living in Cerro Vista where you have a full kitchen and can do a lot more food prep for yourself. I know there are salad bars and some vegetarian options available. the whole campus isn’t well know for the great food choices. Look at the Dining Plans and look at the menus of the restaurants. You can see some of the choices. It is a great school. Don’t let the food choices make your decision.

My daughter who lives in Yosemite isn’t a huge meat-eater. So far she’s eaten a lot of salads at The Avenue because right now they’re half off. Last night when we “ooVooed” her she was eating some raviolis from the VG. (Vista Grande) Not sure if there was meat in it. Another time she had pasta somewhere on campus. Her roommate is a vegetarian. I’ll have to ask my daughter where *she’s *eating. It *is *possible to eat vegetarian, although definitely more limited, I’m sure.

My son lives off campus as a freshman (on advice of the school) because of severe food allergy. He is not veggie per se, but eats a fair amount of vegan food to avoid milk and egg, and some veggie food (if nut-free). He is happy with the New Frontiers grocery store, very close to campus. They have most of the Amy’s meals, burritos, and vegan/veggie pizzas, various soy yogurts and milks, and the Tofutti vegan fake cheese. Ralph’s on Madonna also has soy yogurt, vegan “cheese”, and a decent selection of Amy’s and Kashi products. Both stores have Tofurkey products, other fake meats, and soy nut butter. There is a Trader Joe’s in town, on a busline. I only know about food in SLO outside of campus, but I have been impressed with the quality and selection. I agree, don’t judge by meal plans. Good luck!

There is some vegetarian stuff on campus, but you’ll probably get board of eating the same things over and over again (but then again even meat eaters get board of the food here). There are a couple salad bars, and salad places in the dining halls where you can use your meal plans. There is also pasta and I think that there are occasionally some other vegetarian options (like pitas, wraps, sandwiches). They also have pre-prepared salads and fruit, but these are overpriced if you buy them at school. You can always go to the store or make your own food.

Thank you for all the help guys! I’m gonna listen to your advice and not consider food as a concern! Thank you :)
