Hi I am an intl student of Indian origin and I am a vegetarian. I applied for BME!

Does the campus dining menus have anything for vegetarians?

As I found little vegetarian food on campus, I will have to venture out. But, my parents are absolutely freaked out with all these safety issues being raised about JHU off campus. re there any vegetarian/ Indian restaurants near by? Is Baltimore really that unsafe?

Stop worrying so much. First, there is a substantial Indian community on campus and lots of Hopkins students are vegetarians. There is plenty of vegetarian food available on campus and there are at least two Indian restaurants within easy walking distance of campus. I can assure you that you won’t starve.

Second–the safety issue is, in my opinion, way overblown. The campus itself is very safe. In fact, a major US publication rated Hopkins as the safest campus in the country. The surrounding area is reasonably safe, but one does have to take reasonable precautions as in any urban area (For example, I would not recommend wondering around alone in the middle of the night). The University provides escort service if you have to be out late, and traveling in groups usually ensures safety. Yes, Baltimore does have some very bad neighborhoods (as do many Indian cities), but there is no reason for students to have to venture into those areas. The bottom line is that if you exercise good judgment, you won’t have a problem.

When I visited Hopkins, I went out for lunch in the surrounding area. While Baltimore is certainly not the safest city, the area near JHU seemed pretty comparable to the area around any college that I visited. If I were to attend, I would go with 0 reservations about safety.

Every top 20 school has a high number of vegetarians (due to a large number of Indians/Moral Vegetarians at these schools). Hopkins, i am sure is no different. My school has a special Vegan section that prepares a different meal 3 times a day. I am sure Hopkins has that.

I remember when I was applying to Hopkins last year, a lot of people told me about Indian restauarants that are near by, if you want indian food, you could go there, because Vegan food does not always = REAL indian food.

These Hopkins Forums discussion topics also has some helpful information from current students about dinning on and off-campus. If you read through these threads you’ll see comments from a number of students who are vegetarians:

I visited, and it is definitely a safe place. Baltimore has some safe sections and some not-so-safe parts (like any city), but that doesn’t matter too much because Hopkins has its own private little bubble. It’s pretty. It’s safe. It’s nice:)
Also, Baltimore is not as dangerous as everyone says. Yes, there are murders, and things like that- but not on college campuses! Unless you’re planning on roaming the city streets at 1 in the morning, you’ll be fine. It’s a matter of using common sense.

Most popular vegetarian restaurant at Hopkins is One World Cafe (accross the street form the lacross field). [One World Cafe - Baltimore Vegan Restaurant](http://one-world-cafe.com/)

Since you’re Indian, I don’t think you would like Akbar’s or Tamber’s.

Mughal Garden is alright, but you need to take the JHMI to get there.

In general, campus is safe, but if you start going south and east, it’s not so safe.
For example, take a look at this:

JHU is approximately 3400 N. Charles Street.

The FFC is alright on some days, but the food gets boring and bland real fast. If you’re vegetarian, there is one stand open to you, but other than that, your choices are limited to the salad bar, side dishes, pasta, and pizza.

I should say that my Indian roommate’s Indian-Indian parents love Akbar’s.

Vegetarian food is very consistent, which is OK if you eat the food they serve and enjoy it, but annoying if you like variety or specific foods.
