From the thanksgiving thread, I'm just curious how many vegitarians/vegans are on CC.

Also, I'm in one of those moods where nothing looks like it is spelled correctly, so I apologise.

I'm a vegan.

I'm a vegetarian, but not for any real reason. It started in kindergarden when we took a field trip to the grocery store and I learned what hamburgers were made of. Kind of traumatizing because at that time all I knew about cows was that they were cute and had big eyes and spots and were in ice cream commercials. Have ceased to care but still don't eat meat.

I'm vegan..I became a vegan when I was twelve, I got tired of the taste of meat, and I felt sorry for the animals..

I didn't know there were other vegans on CC. Cool :)
I've been vegetarian since 7th grade, vegan since 8th (I'm a junior now).
There's a lot of ethical reasoning behind it that I could talk your ears off with, but what it boils down to is that I'm trying to live in the least destructive way possible. It's really as simple as that.

I absolutely agree. I've also been a vegan since 8th or 9th grade.

It's always nice to know that there are more of us around than I'd be inclined to think.

yeah, it is cool that there are some of us on CC..but doesn't it get annoying when family members ask, "so when are you going to come back to eating meat?:..i've been vegan for almost four years, and I never plan on going back to eating meat or dairy..but they can't seem to understand that..

whats the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan?

I'm not a vegitarian..i eat red meat BUT i hate chicken. Everytime i look at a piece of chicken leg or wing, i think of live chickens with their ugly eyes and gross necks and stuff. I used to love the taste of chicken but now I can't even make myself eat a piece. Oh and I can't eat fish (in it's original shape) because i think of live fishies with their gross eyes.

I have this friend who calls himself a "vegetarian" (or however you spell it) but I consider him more of an animal racist. He'll only eat chicken for the noble reason that he hates them and thinks they are stupid. But all other meat is off limits- I guess they are more desirable animals. I just think its a pretty funny reason.

A vegan is someone who eats no animal or dairy products at all, and a vegetarian can generally eat dairy products, fish, or chicken, but it has to be only one selection of the groups above..atleast that is what I was told.

I'm vegan as well :) nice to meet (er, know of) y'all!

"He'll only eat chicken for the noble reason that he hates them and thinks they are stupid."

HAHA

Technically, vegetarians do not eat any sort of meat, but they do eat dairy products and/or eggs. Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat both dairy and eggs, lacto vegetarians eat dairy and ovo vegetarians eat eggs. I don't know why, but somewhere along the line vegetarian came to mean "I eat fish but no other meat."

Personally, I think that's cheating. I became a vegetarian for the whole animal rights reason, but it's also so much more healthy if you do it correctly. Plus, my older brother became a vegetarians when he was, like, 14, and I always wanted to be just like him. haha! It's nice though, he's been a veggie for 12 years, so I have someone to talk to when people bug me too much with their whole "YUMMY MEAT!!!" and stuff a triple hamburger down their throat.

My grandmother and dad always say "You'll come back and eat meat again. This is just a phase." One: I've been in since 8th grade and two: plan on continuing since I'm quite happy with my ways.

Yea, I'm a vegetarian and have been one all my life.

I became a vegetarian in 5th grade and stayed one until 8th grade. In 9th grade, one of my friends talked me into reverting back to meat but at the end of 9th grade I went back to veggie. I am a junior veggie now. Some of those videos on Peta.com are rather disturbing.

Just out of curiosity, how hard is the switch from meat to vegan?

for me i found it not so hard. remarkably the only thing i ever have to fight off a craving for is burger king chicken tenders...they were my favorite but other things are much more healthy, less cruel, and some taste better too!

I want to sort of become a veggie. I still love meat (I'm German, so no there's stopping my cravings for cured pork), but I want to eat healthier, especially because the predominant cause of death in my family is heart disease (not obese, but our hearts are the only thing that really goes out), and to generally feel more energized/happier. Any suggestions?

I'm a cheater-vegetarian...i still eat a little fish. I started in the beginning of high school. I used to live where there were a lot of cows and in the fall you could hear them all moo-ing on their way to the slaughter house! Yep, thats why I stopped!

Well red, one thing to do is become a veggie slowly. Reduce your weekly meat intake until you don't eat it at all. And also remember, if you feel your body absolutely needs meat, eat a little. Soon you won't need it. Make sure you like enough other foods though and not just like sugary stuff...vegetables, fruits, peanuts, yogurt, etc. you can find some good recipes for things online too. good luck!
