Vent, Rant, Call it whatever you like

I try to tell people not to take suggestions given on this board too seriously, because of the randomness of admissions (just like UCLA). I understand that you want to know and that your'e anxious, but don't let someone (who is probably extremely underqualified to give you a proper estimate) discourage you from applying to a school. I was in the same boat you were. I thought these people were the end-all-be-all, but after in-depth review of the previous year's CC posts, I decided otherwise.

If your passion is going to harvard, yale, ucla, ucb, [insert university name here] and your scores are a little lower than average, go ahead and APPLY. NOTHING is standing in your way except a $50 or so fee. I know many people who said they didn't apply to a school because of the things said on this board... I mean am I the only one who sees this as blaringly weird? If I am the only one, so be it, but I think it is the wrong thing to do.

On the other hand, there is the proud student who wants to show himself off and posts here with perfect SATs, a perfect GPA, perfect ECs, and they ask if they can get into harvard. Well let me tell you something: I see right through you. You're just a show-off posing as a modest person looking to make a bunch of people you don't even know jealous. Don't even get me started on how pathetic that is.

Thanks for reading. I wish you all the best in your academic and non-academic life,
ado

I totally agree with you!!! When I read the posts of people who made perfect SATs & etc I say the same thing; SHOW-OFF. Then when I read about the people who are like you will never get into this school because you have gpa lower then the school of your interest by 0.4 pts. It makes me angry. Who are they to say someone will never get in?? They obviously don't know who the person is & what there qualifications are.
If you want to apply to Harvard, YALE, MIT, or whatever with an 1100 then by any means necessary go ahead! Don't ever let anyone stop you!!!
My Goal is to get into UGA & that is what I will persue w/the type of background I have!!

Schools want to enroll people not numbers!

I rest my case!!

watch out ado the perfect SAT'ers are coming to get you! trust me ive seen it happen!! BEWARE!!!!

but yeah obviously you want to know your chances but i am still going to apply to every school on my list whether or not someone says its a "big reach"

To be honest with you, perfect SAT's mean nothing to me. It just shows how well a person can prepare for a single test. Life is random, and doing well on a non-random standardized test doesn't prove anything. There is nothing in this world that can measure a person's worth, mentally or otherwise. You are and will be what you make of yourself, regardless of if you go to harvard or if you go to the local community college. Going to a top-tier school doesn't change that.

there are plenty of worthless ivy leaguers outs there just like there are plenty of awesome community college people..but you are like the one millionth person to complain on here so dont waste your breathe

wo0t! 400th thread i officially wasted a large chunk of time on here!

ElCommando: Exactly what I mean, I couldn't have said it better myself.

it saddens me that kids these days are forced to spend thousands of dollars on test-prep courses so that they can ace the SATs....so that they can lead 'successful' lives. what happened to wanting to learn?! do what you like and do it well, don't try to conform to standards that are meaningless.

preach the gospel, ado.

I'm a guy who has a 1570 on the SAT I, 800's on the three SAT II's I took, great EC's and a good class rank. I posted on the MIT threads asking if I could get in and people were like "God, you make me feel terrible about myself" and stuff, assuming that I was an automatic admit (I never thought so) and guess what? I got deferred. And tomorrow (or the day after tomorrow) I've got greater than 50% odds of being rejected. The fact is that the ivy league and ivy league caliber schools are incredibly hard to get into. Probably the majority of people with high stats who post with "what are my chances" do so earnestly, because admissions isn't guaranteed for anyone, and colleges know that SAT scores are a vague indication of aptitude. Also, keep in mind this is a board dedicated to talking about mostly college acceptance- people who post their scores are doing so for that purpose, not to brag. It's not like I'm sitting around in my gym class telling people "OMG I GOT A 1570, THINK I CAN GET INTO HARVARD????" And there's really no need to be so bitter- just because you did poorly on a standardized test and you feel bad about yourself doesn't mean I look down upon you. I think most of the people who get high scores who studied heavily for the SAT realize how bunk it is (because we've pretty artificially increased our scores). Just to show you how meaningless the SAT scores are, my mom got literally half the score that I did. Like hell it's an IQ test.

In response to Goalie's comment, granted, some kids that study for the SAT just want to get into a school like yale so people will be impressed with them, but also, some study because they want to get into a good school because they do want to learn. I'm sorry to say, goalie, but your attack on people who study for the SAT seems like complaining, because you didn't study enough and did worse than you expected to. EVERYTHING in life is a competition (although it's not always cut throat)- you can either sit down and complain about it and ultimately get nowhere, or take part in it.

no..i did well, actually...1530 and didn't study one bit

i just wish there was no cycnicism in learning...i'm not attacking them, it's not really their fault. it's a societal issue

Parents force kids to be cynical about school by cramming down their throats. Thankfully, my parents never did that.

I mean, just look at some of the parents lurking on the board. Thid doesn't apply to everyone, but some of them make me feel genuinely sorry for their children- and some of them seem terribly out of place, like adults lurking around a teenage hangout.

i never said it's any fault of their own, i just said it makes me sad. i think college is the one place where people can fully realize their intellectual potential, and an ivy isn't the only, and oftentimes not the best, place to do this...i wish people didn't have to shoot for 'prestige'

Yeah, I agree with you there. There are so many overly academic kids who just seem desperate to achieve things that really are little indication of how successful you'll be in later life, and even less indication of how happy you'll be. Prestige whores tend to ruin things for kids who just want to learn, but, I suppose they make things more competitive, which will help in the end.

also, these posters need to realize that the others on the board, being prospective college students themselves, have no damn clue as to their true chances...unless someone is a harvard administrator incognito, our guess is as good as yours

haha prestige whores, great phrase

UncleFeezus thats all true...especially about the parents lurking ewww thats nasty...why would they care to help strangers so much....pretty weird
