verification and IRS link

does using the IRS link lessen the possibility for being verified? We have made a few corrections to our fafsa, mostly because I am knew to filing it myself. Will this prompt the schools to verify? who asks for verification, the schools directly or the fafsa?

Check your last correction in your FAFSA, the last file. It will say there if they have chosen your file for verification.

It does not show anything. Does anyone know if the schools ask or if fafsa asks? will they ask at a later date or anytime during the fin. aid process? if I am chosen, what items will they need from me?

Both the federal processor and the school are able to select a school for verification. If the processor selects a student for verification, there is a * next to your EFC.

If you are selected for verification, you will be asked BY THE SCHOOL to submit documentation. Schools can use their own verification forms or federal forms; each school has its own policies. You can be selected for verification any time you make changes on your FAFSA … but you won’t necessarily be selected just because you made changes on your FAFSA. If you are chosen, what you need depends on the reason your FAFSA was selected. New for 2012-13, verifications are based on particular items … one student might need to submit one thing, another student might be asked to submit another. For simplicity, some schools may just require all students to submit the same info.

Watch your mailbox and your student account (if the school has assigned you one). If info is needed, the school will let you know.

MANY students are never selected for verification.

thanks kelsmom. I have all our tax info ready just in case we get asked to verify. I don’t think it’s going to make any difference in our situation because the only thing that we will get on the award side is merit scholarship and unsub. stafford.

Will being verified have any affect on the parent plus loans?

The only effect would be holding things up until the verification is complete. You have PLENTY of time!

Generally speaking, if you are only eligible for unsub loans, you probably won’t be selected for verification … but it does happen.
