I was selected for verification for the 2017-2018 fafsa and was asked to submit Verification of Non-Filing Letter 2015.
I did work in 2015 but I only made around $1000 dollars so I did not file taxes.
I tried getting the non-filling letter online on irs.gov but it did not work for me.
Please let me know what you did if you’ve been in this situation before.
Thanks.
If you cannot do the form online, you can print the form and fax it or mail it to the IRS
I have a student in a similar situation - she has never filed taxes, which I believe is why she cannot get the letter online. Just send the form & wait for the letter in the mail (not fun to wait, but no other option).
@kelsmom If it’ll help some, I have just overcome this situation, info. in the comments.
Yes, you can always go to an IRS office in this case, assuming one is near you & you have lots of time to sit/wait. The form has a place to check off that you have never filed, and it takes about 10 days (which should not be an issue if you have been selected for verification for 17-18). Thanks for confirming what I thought (about the fact that the student never filed a return being the reason the letter can’t be ordered online).
I only waited 5 mins and they took me in since everything is online now (yeah it was far from me). They also put me on hold for this upcoming spring semester for my finaid and I had a 10 day deadline (plus processing of documents by school). I just couldn’t wait that long they had deferred my aid but for a limited time…I got the letter in my hand and turned it in that very day. And yes, neither online nor by phone (after calling the IRS exactly 10 times cause my school told me the IRS reps were lying… :p)
Was the $1000 you earned shown on a W-2 from your employer?
File IRS form 4506-T. Line 7 if for the Non Filer verification letter. You can go to www.irs.gov and go to forms to find it. Be sure to print out the 4506-T not 4506 which is for copies of tax returns. You probably couldn’t file on line because they require you have a credit card, mortgage, car loan etc. to be able to register on line. Essentially they want the IRS to confirm you did not file taxes for 2015. I am going through this as well with my younger D.

Mail the form to the appropriate office and they will send you the non filer verification letter.
Yes, I have the W-2 form
Anything in Box 2?
blank
@lvvcsf Has your daughter gotten her letter yet? I mailed my form in over two weeks ago and still have not gotten anything. Deadlines are approaching and I don’t know what to do
No she has not. They said 10 days…?
You can go to your local IRS office to pick it up. Call ahead to find out what they want/ need you to do
@niclyde95 My D received her Notification of non filing letter today. A bit longer than they had indicated.
@lvvcsf how long did it take to receive the letter? I am still waiting for mine. It has been 15 days.
It was around 3 weeks. The request was sent out Jan 17 and she received it Feb 7.
I’m in a similar situation here. I didn’t work and have not worked since 2012. The aid office told me the rules changed, and so I need to get a letter stating I didn’t file in 2015. I plan to print it off and fax it ASAP.
