Today I received a letter from the Office of Student Aid asking me to provide verification for my FAFSA form. It says to "submit a legible, SIGNED copy of IRS Form 1040..." Above that it says, "PARENT(S) 2006 INFORMATION: ("Parent(s)" includes parent and current spouse)."

What happens if only my mom works and filed taxes for 2006. My dad didn't do work, and therefore, had no taxes to file. Do I just send my mom's stuff?

Typically, a mother and father who reside in the same household will file a "Joint Tax Return" even if only one spouse had income. If they didn't...they may want to consult with a Professional Tax Preparer, as they may have paid higher taxes then necessary. Otherwise, you will need to consult with the FA Office to see what paperwork will be necessary for your father. In my office, we would require a tax transcript to prove that he did not file a tax return. Other FA Offices will take a self-statement to that effect...and other offices all somewhere in the middle.
