Verifying ECs

How do colleges check if you're the president of so and so club and/or you actually swam on varsity swimming and such?

guidance counselors? no idea

well, our school has a lis of clubs and officer positions and whatnot

Some high schools require you to validate your ECs before applications are sent off. But for the most part, colleges don't check to see whether you're lying or not. The UCs, though, randomly do checks on 10% of the applicants.

Well to put it on, one would expect it to be an official school sanctioned club, so obviously its going to be there. Swim team, again, has a roster the school is well aware of. Big private schools don't care too much, but Harvard and other Ivies have been known to revoke someone convicted of lying on ECs at any point (even after you graduate for some years; they revoke your diploma) Generally they can find out during the interview, where its clear sometimes that, if such-and-such person doesn't know so much about the, say, MS club that they're supposedly president of, then it would be a big clue that they're lying.
