When we drove the Kancamagus Highway in October of 2018 it was not crowded at all. We actually stayed in Mt Snow on the trip in a hotel that looks up at the ski area. We were the only customers in the hotel and it was closing until Thanksgiving right after we left. Fortunately the people that took care of the hotel were also staying there. They upgraded our room to a suite with a fireplace. We had a lovely time on that trip.
Here is where you can check for the progression of fall foliage.

I’d also add, check the date something was written. At full peak, leaves change quickly and can fall off in an afternoon. Watch for rain as well.
Fantastic tips - thank you!!!
I need to pinpoint the exact weekend!
I’ve been to Kancamagus High way and Route 100 to Stowe the past 2 days. I would skip Stowe, the place is full of tourists from coach/bus. One place ran out of food because of too many people. I highly recommend Kancagamus high way on the week day, I avoided weekend, it’s not crowded at all.
If you are still going, it is probably worth thinking about Massachusetts (Berkshires or Pioneer Valley, which would be less expensive) or Southern Vermont (Brattleboro or Putney, which is funkier if I remember correctly). Since we live in an exurb of Boston, the fall is beautiful and the leaves change a bit after Vermont. Remarkably, tourists come to see the leaves here and we used to see tour buses driving on our modest three block long street. In our current house, we just see trees and animals.
You could probably also leaf peep in Northern CT.
We live in southern New England, and I think the foliage season has peaked here…so probably has done so further north too. Really, early October is great foliage in New England.
Thank you for the added thoughts!!!
Ultimately, my hub was not okay with an 8 hour (one way) drive to Vermont. I was sad about that but understood. Maybe next year for a long weekend!
Good to know there are somewhat closer locales, although Vermont has always been the dream (for me). I will be revisiting this thread in 9 months (so can book early!!).
Book early and go to Vermont. You don’t have to drive all the way on one day. Find an interesting spot half way or so. No matter where you are coming from, there is something!
Two weeks ago in Litchfield County CT. We’ve had rain…so far less leaves now. Really all that’s hanging on is the yellow oak leaves.
Beautiful pix!!!
