I am an African American Junior who lives in VA. I am really worried about my chances of getting into a university such as Harvard so I would appreciate the insight of students who have been accepted. Here are my stats:

3.7 GPA

No SATs at the moment (will be taking them June 3rd)

My father attended Harvard University (Law School)

I Co-Founded a not-for profit organization called Teens 4 Peace

Under Teens 4 Peace I was able to help organize a huge rally in order to stop the genocide occuring in Darfur, Sudan. It was a huge success, mostly becuase it was organized in Washington D.C.'s popular Dupont Circle

I am a regular Volunteer at the Amnesty International Headquarts in DC

I was an internet at INOVA Fairfax Hospital's Blood Bank

I Volunteered for Time Kaine's Campaign for Governor during the summer of 2005

I am a regular volunteer at my public library

I attended the Boston Area Darfur Activism Conference at Harvard University last Winter

I am taking a french literature course at George Mason University (dual-enrollment)

I will be teaching English at a Sudanese public school this summer when I go visit my famly there

I will also be shaddowing Sudan's Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs (who is a good friend of my father's)

I am the president of my local Sudanese Youth Group

I am the president of my school's French Honor Society

I am a member of Model United Nations

I am the president of my school's Young Democrats chapter

I have also recently recieved a letter urging me to apply. I realize that many students recieve these types of letters annually, but nevertheless found it encouraging. Please read my stats and candidly evaluate my chances! Thank you!

Arwa

oh, and in case you are wondering: Teens 4 Peace is an organization that encourages adolescent involvement promoting human rights in the international community.

INTERN (not internet, lol) at Fairfax Hosptal.. Sorry for the typo!! ^_^

Well 3.7 GPA is a little low, especially if it's weighted. But, then again, you're black so they might forgive you for it.

URM acceptences are hard to predict. Your URM status will help you the most if you:

took the hardest class load

have a legitimate claim to being underpriviledged other than your race

Overall, I'd say you have a good chance with some 2100+ SATs. And the chances gets better the moreso those above points are true.

Yes, I would say my workload is very rigourous. This year I am taking
-AP Biology
-AP French Language
-AP Government & Politics
-Debate
-AP English Language & Compositition
-Precalculus Honors

omg, im an URM jr too!!! (latino), i got a letter, but only scored a 1290... i was like.... WHAT? then agian a gagllion of peeps get them, 'sides, HYPS is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar to much of a reach

Harvard Law School legacy won't help you get into Harvard College. Sorry.

Sounds like you have about as good a shot as any other Harvard applicant. If your SATs are 2250 or above, a 3.7 gpa doesn't look so bad. I think you have a good chance tho., so keep plugging away!

I hope so! I'm planning on applying early.. as Harvard really is my #1 choice and I would rather find out sooner rather than later whether or not I was accepted...

Not to hijack the thread but..do adcoms notice that an applicants father went to Harvard Law? Doesn't this fact refute any claims to URM status..

Most EA applicants to Harvard get deferred, so don't expect to know in Dec. whether you're in or out. Make sure that you take the time to do careful applications to other colleges, too. Don't wait until you hear from Harvard because if you're deferred, you'll be close to the holiday season and won't be in the mood to thoughtfully do more applications.

If you still have your sudanes passport, apply with it. I'm not sure if it will help you in anyways, but it doesn't hurt to try.

Contrary to what others in this thread have said, I am very confident of your chances. You have real dedication to a cause, a relatively strong GPA, and you're black! I think you're a shoe in, honestly. If you get about 2100 on your SAT, you're in. Good luck!

ur in dude... dont apply as an international though... tell them ur american... URM will do the rest
