VERY confused about Berkeley or UCI

I have just been admitted to UC Berkeley and i have also been admitted to UC Irvine. I only have until May 1st to make my decision and i hear conflicting information from different people. I have heard Berkeley is considered very cut-throat and that it is very difficult to maintain a high GPA there. I have also heard that med schools dont take the undergrad college into consideration too much. Is this true? Would it be smarter to just go to UCI and probably get a better grades or go to Berkeley which is a more prestigious school and possibly get a lower GPA. Does anyone have the stats on how well Berkeley students do as opposed to UCI students in getting into med school? Which school would maximize my chances of attending med school?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Deciding between Berk and UCI is based on which atmosphere you like better. Applying to med school frm Cal will give you only a slight advantage over applying from UCI. In regards to competitiveness-i think UCI might be slightly less competetive. But whichever one you decide, remember you're gonna need to work extremely hard. Premed at both places is extremely difficult.

Thanks for the reply SYDB..I would much rather go to Berkeley, it has been my dream school for a long time, however do you think the slight advatange i will get by applying from Berkeley is worth the potentially lower GPA?

The EDUCATION you get by applying from Berkeley certainly will be.

Don't forget - you don't just have to get into medical school, you have to do well there, too! Learning good study habits is crucial.

Just don't take 20 units a semester and you'll do fine.

im pretty sure that berkeley will be the better choice. GPA will be hard wherever you go, so if you work your hardest and what the grades that bad, you'll get them. Just be sure to confer with berk students ahead of you on which courses/professors to take and dont load yourself up with a hard classes/major.

Any other suggestions would be awesome

just a question: did you apply to UCLA?

Yes, i got accepted to UCLA, but i live about 5 minutes away from the campus. I wanna go somewhere new

It's a shame, becuase I suspect UCLA (with its access to University hospitals, med school faculty/research, etc) would actually be the best option.

But, then, having never gone to a UC, I'm not really in a position to know.

Anyone have any other throughts on whether Berkeley or UCI is better for pre-med?

Thanks

Whatever you choose, and whatever the results turn out to be, your education is something you carry around with you.

Pick the school that you will be prouder to have attended.

What do you guys think of UCLA v UCB then... just wondering

definitely go to UCLA its simply a better move and your chance of acceptance at Med school is way better.

why do u say that pre-medwannabe (im prolly goin to UCLA btw)

UCLA is a much more "well rounded" school with professors taht care more about their students and less about their research because it is much less research oriented and there is less grade deflation and in my opinion UCLA has a better program for pre-med students especially if you like psychology and other social sciences.

thanks i am probably a psychobio major

I would go to UCI-- Berkeley is VERY cutthroat-- everyone's pre med. Choose carefully, because Irvine is not only small, has a good science program, and might be easier to get into med. school

definitely UCLA or Irvine. That is for sure.

Can you tell me why not berkeley... I really want to know because I also have some reservations about going to berekeley and I definitely don't want to jepordize my gpa. I just want to know more information about the cons of berkeley compared to other UC's. Thanks
