Very Disappointing Subject Test Scores

I’m really disappointed about my subject test scores. The first time I took Math 2 and Chemistry, it was the end of my sophomore year and I had scored 660 and 650 respectively. Those are pretty low scores and I retook the tests again at the end of my junior year (June 2016). I ended up getting a 610 in Chemistry and a 680 in Math 2.

The Chemistry test was difficult for me, so I understand that low score. But for the math, I honestly thought I had gotten an 800 or near an 800, so my score was shocking and extremely disheartening.

I need to get decent subject test scores for college applications, so I’ll be taking more subject tests in October. I can’t afford to take Chemistry for a third time, that’ll look very bad on my applications, so I’ll be taking Biology M since I’ve taught myself a lot of bio lately. It’ll be my third time for math 2, but there’s no alternative unfortunately. I was also thinking about taking the Literature subject test since I took AP Lang and did very well, but I won’t if I can’t guarantee myself a good score.

I’m a great student, my GPA and grades are near perfect, my SAT scores are 99th percentile, my AP scores are good. I don’t know why my subject test scores are so low. I’ve been using the Barron’s books to study and I got around 700s on those practice tests, so it’s wild to me why those scores didn’t carry out to the actual test.

If you have any tips on Math 2, Biology M, Literature (good books, good prep, anything), or just helping with my abysmal subject test scores in general, I’d greatly appreciate it. Sorry this was so long, these test scores just added to my stress of college applications and I needed to get this out.

There are schools that don’t requirement SAT Subject tests

@4kidsdad yeah, but a number of schools that I’m applying to either require or recommend them, so I need at least two :frowning:

OP, what specific schools are you seeking, may I ask? I will say that subject tests are slightly going out of favor…Harvard doesn’t require them anymore…and with your amazing overall SAT score, it just may not be that big of a deal.

This article will make you feel better:
http://college.usatoday.com/2016/07/18/columbia-and-barnard-are-the-latest-schools-to-drop-sat-and-act-requirements/

"This comes less than a month after Columbia University dropped the SAT Subject Test and essay score requirements from its applications.

“Standardized tests are simply one component of our holistic admissions review, in which quantitative credentials are assessed within the broader context of an applicant’s interests, background, personal qualities and accomplishments,” says Columbia Undergraduate Admissions on the change. “We hope the increased flexibility with our application will ease some of the stress students may feel when going through the college admissions process.”

Columbia is the second Ivy League school to drop the essay requirement, and four Ivies — Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, and the University of Pennsylvania —already have gotten rid of the Subject Test requirement entirely — though they all recommend submitting scores. Cornell has done so for entrance to some — but not all — of its colleges. And in 2014, Harvard revised their application requirements so that Subject Tests would not be strictly required."

@SouthernHope I’m applying mostly to Ivies and other top schools. I know that MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and Cornell require one math and one science for admission into their school of engineering. A lot of the Ivies “recommend” subject tests, and I thought that it might hurt my application to not send subject scores. That’s a nice article and makes me feel a bit better, thanks for sharing.

Don’t just use Barrons. Barrons is good for more difficult questions but for real test practice also buy the official guide, Kaplan, and Princeton. Don’t just stick to one prep book.
