I think i understand
how is it possible then that someone has a 4.7 UW GPA (yeah, i saw this plenty of times on CC)
thats either a 117.5 if we're using the 4.7/4.0 = 1.175 x 100 = 117.5
impossible
or 4.7 = 102, which is still impossible

do these ppl use a different GPA system

Yes these students are using a different system. MIT, for example, uses a five point scale.

at my school APs are weighted grades so each letter grade is bumped one point up. For example an A in an AP class is 5.0 (80-89 is 4.0 and so on) but that is weighted...not weighted
so ya

in a 5.0 scale
4.7/5 = .94
94%

in a 4 point scale, 94% = 3.8
in my school, 95% = 4.0 and every 1% less is .1 less in GPA
so 94% = 3.9

which looks best on paper: 4.7,3.8,3.9. The 3.9 does (IMO) because its only .1 away from a 4.0, whereas a 4.7 is .3 away from a 5.0

am i rite?

You seem to have completely missed what we've been trying to say. You can't convert 4.7/5 into 94%.

Wait, I have already had discussions on this. I have gotten a few A-s, which are 92-94%, but my school says they are still considered 4.0s according to our grading system. So, as a result, my UW GPA is a 4.0. Would the colleges recalculate, because I was told all As are the same for UW GPA, and the different As are used for W GPA.

I imagine that top colleges will recalculate your GPA. If colleges didn't differentiate between A's and A-'s by weighting them differently, it would be harder for them to make the fine distinctions they need to be able to make.

4 A's and one B would be 3.8, right?

i wish there was a standard system
but i think i know what ur saying

There are too many factors that differ between high schools for a standard grading system to make much of an impact. At some schools, relatively average students will have no problem getting an A in a course while those in others might struggle. This is what is inherently unfair about college admissions and something that many of the top universities realize (thus explaining why so many 4.0s get rejected while 3.9s elsewhere take their place).

Anyone questioning the importance of SATs after going through this thread? lol my head is spinning

gotta agree w/u there
SAT's are amazing
too bad there are more cheaters now

at my school:
A=4
A-=3.61
B+=3.25
B=3
B-=2.61
and so on. its a lot harder because A is 98 and above.

And the profile your school sends with the transcript will explain how the GPA was determined, the grading scale used, etc. Our HS gives quarterly grades as a percentage, but the transcript just lists the final grade as A, B, etc. No - or +.
