for the common application, does each personal statement HAVE to be under 500 characters or is there a way to attach a file???? please help!!!!! thanks

well, they probably only want to read something under 500 characters cause they have so many applications to read. i had to edit mine a lot. you could ask on the nyu formus on admissions.nyu.edu. but i think they only want 500 characters or under, otherwise they wouldn't have made a limit.

my essay was 530 or so words, and I still got in. As long as it's not absurdly longer than it's supposed to be, I'm sure they won't notice. I used nyu's application form though, i'm not sure about the common app.

mine was like 528 words. Had to edit a bit but with the attached file you have leeway (and I doubt anyone's gonna count). The short answers had to fit in the space. I had to edited them 4 times each...it was brutal but a good excercise

yea actually they're right. lol idk, it's just on common app they kept cutting me off.

I'm using the common app..... is there any way i can atttatch the files rather than limit it to like 3 sentences??

They WANT you to limit it to like 3 sentences, that's why it cuts you off. It's frustrating but I guess it's more challanging and they are trying to challange their applicants. Following directions is also something they look for. And since those short answers have a "fill in the blank" space, I wouldn't mess with it. There IS a quote on NYU's application instruction page (not exact)
'Please follow instructions, don't think that you found a better way to do it'.
That said, remember they only want ONE teacher rec, the adcom I spoke to was adamant about this. ANyone can look good sending in a bunch of recs and using 8 lines to fill in what they want you to in three...but I wouldn't mess with it.

Also, if anyone is using the nyu app, the short answers cut you off before it's supposed to. Like, when your typing it in, it looks fine, but when you do the preview it cuts off like part of your last sentence so make sure you preview everything before you send it in.

i wouldnt worry about the teacher rec part.

u know, just dont send in like 6+ recs, hahaha.

but i have a few friends who got in this year for ED and sent 1 or 2 extra recs. =).

is it okay if i attach a continuation of the supplement in the addiontional info section?

ahaha oh god. i wrote those 5 little essays without knowing that there's a limit, so the majority of my answers were cut off when i posted it at 9pm on the due date.

and here I am today, a NYU freshmen. either that shows that I interested the admissions officer by leaving him or her feeling suspense without an ending... orrrr it shows how little they matter.
