Very interested in Cornell AEM RD, can anyone answer some questions

Hi, I am a New Yorker who is interested in applyin to cornell's ag school for aem in the regular decision round. I have a couple questions regarding this

(1) i hear that they accept about 100 freshmen a year. how many spots are filled do you think by early decision.

(2) how competitive is the school. if you can compare it to the difficulty of a similar school i would appreciate it

(3) do i have an advantage applyin from new york?

congratulations to all those who got in ed, thanks

I know the acceptance rate for AEM is around 20% but other than that who knows. I got accepted ED, but i don't know how many others did.

it's extremely competitive to get into, I was deferred. You really need alot of EC's dealing with business and great stats to have a chance. Good luck.

Jason: Trust me, it aint about having EC's. I know someone who got in just because they had a 98 avg and 2200 on the SAT.

Me, on the other hand, had a 96.5 avg, 2090 SAT and Captain of Tennis team, assistant editor of a section on the newspaper, and head chemistry tutor for after math and got deferred.

What is important is that Cornell sees that you are a fit for the major (which i find hard to believe after i got deferred cause i had 2 recommendations from business related things)

Have those stats!

well 2100 or bust, stats wise im very similar to you, i have taken 12 aps, and my strongest feature is my extracurricular activities ( class pres, nhs pres, shs pres, wall street pres, fed challenge captain, editor of newspaper) so im hopign i have a shot

I am actually a senior in AEM - it is an incredible program and does great with job placement - I am working for Citigroup next year as an investment bankier and had offers from Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan, and Deutsche, and many of my friends were just as fortunate. They love Cornelll kids and the program is really starting to establish itself. It should be a top 8 business school within 2 years and top 5 within 5. Because fo this, it is very competitive. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message.

sports684,
I just got into AEM today. I'm very excited. Can you post a list of classes that you recommend? Any other advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

I mean you have your core AEM classes which everyone has to take, finance, accounting, marketing, etc. Because I transferred in junior year form Arts and Sciences, I haven't had much time to take many electives but next semester I am taking securities trading and market making and capitual valuation of investments - I have heard they are good. If you were accepted to AEM, do you mind posting your stats and EC's. I know many of us are interested to see the caliber of students this year.

in response to sports684, I will post my stats that got me in this year.

Work
Interned this summer at Mercantile Exchange in NYC for same Wharton graduate....I feel like this was a very important part of my application, wrote an essay about it and acted as a hook.

very good essays
great recs, including Wharton graduate that i interned for, and former Cornell alumnus who is an important lawyer

I am still so thrilled that i got in!!

Believe me, you should be ecstatic..it is such an amazing program and by the time you are there they will most likely have a donor and have the school named - there is a huge capital campaign right now. Congrats!

Wow, things are so different now. Four years ago, AEM used to be the major that failed out engineers go to. Now it's probably one of the top programs at Cornell.

it is now the most selective major at Cornell

Most selective in average SAT and high school GPA? I doubt it. One of the most popular major that people apply to? You bet. Why wouldn't you apply if you are a NYS resident? When you can get an Ivy League undergraduate business degree while paying in state tuition, that is call a bargain. I am pretty happy to see that there's a department on the rise at Cornell. I really hope to see that they can move AEM into the Johnson School. College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is just a bit too weird.

Why would they move the undergrad major AEM into an exclusively graduate school? I doubt they'd change the nature of the Johnson School just to accomodate one major...

rumor has it that they are trying to make AEM its own school and disassociate it from CALS....rumor also has it that cornell will be all private by 2010

First part I am not sure. Second part is very unlikely. There's the history and tradition in being a private/statutory university, I don’t think the administrators are going to change it. On top of that, Cornell gets so much money from the state of New York for its research and other crap. By making Cornell all private, we will lose tons of money and no one wants that to happen.

sports684, where did you hear those rumors from? Even though I am not actively in Cornell Image Committee or anything along that line, I do have a little bit of insider info on the progression of the university.
