I am a new prospective student of the SHA program at BU, and when I say new I mean VERY new. The reason I say this is, just recently (about 2 weeks ago) I have realized that Hospitality Management is what I am truly interested in purely for the fact that I love people, food, and traveling. Originally I thought that in order to satisfy theses loves, business and marketing were the paths to pursue. However, upon further investigation, I discovered that Hospitality Management is the best way to satiate these passions of mine. Now, the reason that I post this today is to ask, since my interest and focus until recently has been in the business and marketing realm, ( So much so that I have been involved in FBLA, and every business oriented class that my school has to offer, AND I am actually doing a Marketing Internship next year ) I am curious if it is too late to become interested in the Hospitality Industry? If not, what do you suggest that I do in order to demonstrate my interest in this field? I look forward to hearing a response from anybody with any form of input!

Have you taken a serious look at the classes included in a typical Hospitality Management program? Your school may vary, but the programs I’ve looked at have basically been “diet business” majors, consisting of watered-down accounting classes, watered-down human resources classes, etc. You may possibly risk downgrading by changing your major, especially when you’ve landed an internship.

I’m quite confident you’d you’d graduate with more potential with a business degree than a hospitality management degree, including within the hospitality industry.

This is not exactly scientific research mind you, but I have a close relative with a hospitality management degree from a reputable California university, and after job searching for a couple of years they ended up going back for a business degree. All of the hotels and travel companies seemed to be hiring marketing coordinators, financial analysts, and accountants, who were eventually eligible for managerial promotions and all of the travel & people perks via promotion. None were hiring “hospitality managers” straight out of school.

No input, though I have to say, what impressive passions /:

@discoinferno Well, I have looked at the courses that are offered with a Hospitality degree at BU and I must say, it would seem like beating a dead horse to get a business undergrad degree with a hospitality degree. However that may just be my naiveness, but I’m not only interested in hotels, I am also interested in Restaurants and Nightlife and what BU has to offer is a program called “4+1” which is a program that while receiving your undergrad degree from Hospitality you can also receive a masters degree in Gastronomy. That may seem very Liberal Artsy but I LOVE FOOD! Hahaha so that program sounds like heaven to me! However again I am quite naive and new to this whole realm and what it has to offer! But I may have an opportunity to have a better idea on what this field is about after this summer because I am potentially going to shadow an owner of 2 local hotels and 1 restaurant!

@vienneselights Thank you! I feel those are the best passions to have! The world is too big and life is too short to have any other passions :D
