I entered a national art competition that give out many awards because there are many categories. I won in three of these categories. Would this count as "three national awards" (because I won three awards) or "one national award" because this was only one competition?

i would say three national awards imo.

Three awards from a single competition seems like a significant achievement to me. Why don’t you ask your GC to mention it in your reccomendation and make things clear there? In my opinion, colleges could easily misinterpret it if you write “three awards” without any aditional explanation. They could assume it’s in three consecutive years. This, however, seems somehow inferior than your actual performance.

Of course, this is just my advice. It’s your life and your college admissions we are talking about

^Though you check off which grades, so I doubt they’d think they’re 3 consecutive years

My advice is that if you have >5 good awards, then put them as one, otherwise, put them as 3 lol
