I’m planning on listing my 1st choice major as chemical engineering. If i put undecided as my 2nd pick (backup)would i be safe just in case in don’t get into engineering since it’s very competitive?

Btw I’m applying to the vast majority of the UCs.

I'd suggest listing a non-engineering major (e.g., chemistry) as your alternative, but only if you'd actually be willing to attend in that major.

It depends... if you're only interested in Engineering and you believe Chem Eng is more competitive than other engineering majors, then Engineering undeclared is a good choice. If you want your alternative to be in a less competitive college (e.g., Arts & Letters), then it's fine to specify a major of interest unless it's impacted.

You can check on each UC's website to see what majors are impacted.

An impacted major is one that is limiting enrollment. It is so tightly wedged full that there may not be room for everyone the school would like to admit to take that particular major. Usually you are asked to also select an alternate major that is not impacted on your UC application. This will not affect your admission to the campus and you could be admitted in either major. It is also often possible for an admitted student to change majors later.

So let me get this straight. Major willl not affect my admissions? So i won't get outright rejected because of my choice of major? They'll just put me under my alternative or some other major then?
