So, I was accepted into Northwestern Regular Decision and as of now, it's my top choice.

My only concern is that from what I've heard from many other people (current students, past students, etc.), NU's campus is much more socially active than many other upper-tier colleges in the sense that there are a lot more frat-parties, parties in general, and drinking going on.

Now, normally for someone who wants a social life, this would be a good thing, but I have the misfortune of being allergic to alcohol.

Please note that I am NOT being a troll. I AM actually allergic to alcohol. It would take approximately .2 ounces of ingested alcohol to kill me, and just the fumes are enough to make me nauseous and dizzy. Consequently, I CAN'T actually attend a party that has alcohol at it.

For high school this was fine, considering social life didn't exactly revolve around drinking and partying, but will I actually be able to have a decent social life at Northwestern while being unable to do any of this?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is:
-How much partying DOES go on at Northwestern?
-How frequently do parties have alcohol at them?
-In the case that most parties DO have alcohol at them and most of the social life DOES revolve around the parties, will my life be socially decent if I can't attend any of them?

You will be able to have a good social life at NU even with your allergy. We party no more (and really probably less) than a lot of other schools of similar caliber (e.g. Cornell, Darmouth).

Also - from what I’ve seen you could attend performances of some sort (a cappella, theatre, music, film, etc.) most nights of the week, never go near a party, and still have quite a full social calendar.

I hate the taste of alcohol and do not consume it because of peer pressure. I still enjoyed high school and what parties there were even with my red solo cup filled with Pepsi. I’m sure you (we since I still can’t stand it) will have fun. Trust me when everybody who is drinking has lost their energy you will still be going strong.(:

Although I’ll be honest, if just the fumes make you nauseous and dizzy that might be a problem at most colleges. Just make sure the housing people know so they don’t room you with someone who might have alcohol in the room.

Also, protip: Don’t drink the juice at parties. At my fraternity we always had non-alcoholic drinks (sodas) and water bottles at all the parties though.

It’s totally easy to go through 4 years without drinking alcohol. You might have to stand firmer in some fraternities than in others, but generally it’s not a problem.

EskieLover-most likely there will be alcohol at the parties. My kid’s in a frat and he does not drink, but that won’t help you with your allergy issue. It is possible though that at some of the frat parties the alcohol is kept and imbibed on certain floors (see the comment above about risk management) and not present on other floors. There are all kinds of social events happening at NU with theatre performances virtually every weekend (Thurs-Sun) during the year as well as acapella concerts, comedy shows, etc. Not everything revolves around alcohol. There probably is more going on at NU that does not involve alcohol than at other universities.

amtc brings up a very important point. If you have a documented allergy to alcohol, it will be very important to let the Residential Life staff know about this so that housing accommodations will be appropriate.

Alright, thanks for the help everyone, I’m not sure how exactly the housing for applications work since I’m not in possession of them yet, but I’ll keep that in mind!
