Very very basic housing questions....

So, ive just now decided to go to unc and im incredibly confused about housing, so here comes a few questions…

Hall style vs. suite style. What are hall and suite styles exactly???

learning communities…whats the difference between that and normal housing? So if you go to a language house for instance, you’re not allowed to speak english??(if so, is that where all the foreigners gather???)

Apartments vs. residence halls: what’s the difference and are undergraudates only allowed in residence halls? Are residence halls better to get to know people?

I’ve heard that north is farther away and south is closer to classes (middle is…well in the middle). Is it true? Would you recommend that i go to south or is the north community close enough so it shouldn’t matter?

Substance free dorms…so if it isnt specified that the dorm is “substance free” does it mean it’s going to be inevitably “with substance”. And anyway, what do you mean by substance free?

Smoking not allowed in any dorm, correct?

7.Air conditioning: central vs. window. What are they and which one is better? Will having none be very bad during the summer?

Is housing distinguished for freshman, sophomore, junior etc.? I’ve heard that there isn’t really a rule saying that but arent there dorms where there are traditionally more freshman?

I know it’s a lot of questions, but im really panicking. This is even more difficult than when i actually had to choose between colleges. Any help would be VASTLY appreciated. Thank you.

Hey man. I’m so happy you decided to come to UNC! You’ll be so glad, I promise.

So basically all of north is hall style - your whole hall will have your same sex. Then a bathroom that everyone shares but is often cleaned. That sounds bad about the bathrooms, but it actually just magically works out. I never had to wait for a shower in the three semesters I lived in hall style. Also if one of the toilets is broken, not my problem!

On south there are three types - all are kind of suite style. There’s the Ehaus, Craige, and Hinton James type, where you and two other rooms share one bathroom. Then there’s the directional dorms (or whatever they’re called now) where you and your next door neighbor share a bathroom. Then there’s the Morrison super suites, where (I think this is right) you have you and your neighbor’s room, then a common room, then a bathroom.

So there’s several different types of learning communities. One is the one in Cobb where if you and your friends have a common interest you can work on it. I’ve yet to meet someone who’s ever done that but I hear about it all the time! There’s the substance hall place, the diversity one, I don’t know, there are a ton, and yet I’ve never met anyone who’s done them. I know a few people who’ll be living in the Chinese place in Teague next year. I don’t know what the deal is. I’m not very helpful here, whoops.

The apartments are mostttlyyy for upperclassmen. As a freshman, you’ll want a residence hall, case closed. Then next year you can look into other stuff!

North is closer to classes, south is farther. A lot of people say South is where the real freshman experience is.

I mean, I LOVED living on North. I wouldn’t’ve lived anywhere else. And can’t actually imagine having lived on South… I loved being so close to South and my farthest class being ten minutes away. I felt like I was definitely getting the freshman experience, it was just pimped out. That’s kind of how I looked at it.

College isn’t like it is on the movies where people just walk around the hallways half naked and drunk… at least Carolina isn’t. I don’t know, if people are partying or drunk they’re not all over the place about it in the dorms. RAs are pretty serious.

By substance free, if someone comes back to the dorm drunk, that’s bad. I think the way it works is that everyone’s kind of on the honor code. If you’re in that dorm, no one’s going to like… turn you in for drinking (maybe I’m wrong), but if you decide to live there then it’s because you WANT to be there, so I don’t think that problem is rampant. I hear that the substance free dorms are pretty much 100% super Christian.

Nope, it isn’t. It actually isn’t allowed anywhere on campus except at this one flag pole at the center of the quad. This is controversial!

All AC is the same, I think. It kind of sucks not having one but from what I hear it’s not so bad.

Nope, but you won’t find many freshmen in Ehaus, Craige, or Hinton James.

PM me if you have any more questions!

^^^ actually you WILL find many freshman in Ehaus, Craige and, Hinton James… in fact that’s basically all you’ll find, haha ;)

WHOOPS! I meant to type upperclassmen. :)
