very very low shameful SAT score

I am rather embarrassed to even be posting a topic about my SAT score.

CR: 650
M: 500
W: 570

I am so depressed about my score, but Johns Hopkins is my dream. I know I don't come anywhere close to the SAT cut for acceptance...but is there maybe even a small chance???

Rank: 2
I've taken with out a doubt the most rigorous classes for all four years.
Volunteer: summer hospital volunteer, homeless shelter (4hr/wk), tutoring at local middle school, annual elementary school gift drive (coordinator)
EC: Student Council President, Literary Magazine secretary, NHS, Student and School Board Forum (selected representative of school)

I don't know much about John Hopkins, but if you are unhappy with your scores, you can always take the SAT again. They take the highest critical reading, highest math, highest writing, even if they are from different testing dates.

SAT's will not determine everything -- as long as other parts of your application make up for it.

If the other parts are really good as in beyond amazing...they will probably recognize you as the "poor standardized test taker"

I'm retaking my SAT II's in December..so I don't have a choice. I know that SAT's don't determine everything but it's such a dooming feeling with this score. I feel like they won't even look at me after they see the score.....

From http://apply.jhu.edu/facts/facts.html

Middle 50% of admitted students for 2006:
SAT Verbal: 650-750
SAT Math: 690-790
SAT Writing: 650-740

That means, statistically, that 25% of admitted students scored below 650/690/650. So it's not impossible by any means. Don't get caught up in the numbers!

WE GOT THE SAME SCORE!

lol. i know how you feel. JHU is my dream school too and everything else besides my SAT is good. I have 500+ Vol. hours, Full IB... When i found out my SAT score at 5am, I cried until school started.

if you stand out and have strengths in areas where other students do not, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of getting admitted. there's still plenty of time to make yourself shine! even after you submit your app. :)

thanks guys for replying....I feel a bit better now about the numbers. It just really made me feel sorry for myself, kind of hopless. I just see 25% as so small.

tinas: Yeah, I cried too until I had to go to school....good luck!

Well...if you're a junior, you still have months to go... I like JHU too. Went to Pre-College and had so much fun... Do you guys think I can get in under ED?

SAT: 1860 (1st) 2030 (2nd) 2120 (last) > Can't believe I improved so much^^;; Hard work pays off!
SAT II: Will be sent Nov. 28...only 'cause Korean's offered in Nov. :)
EC's: A lot...but I'll probably put in youth symphonies I've done, church activities, and bunch of hospital and community service work...oh yeah school clubs and stuff...

Need as much advice as I can...going crazy over apps...

Wait, you're a junior? then what are you worried about? You still have a year.

Not exactly
You assume 100% overlap between those three groups. However, many students only scored beneath those numbers on one section, not all of them.
The 25%-75% combined score is 1990-2280. Divding by 3 yields an average 25%-75% section score of 663-760.

No, I'm not a Junior, I'm a Senior which is why I'm all worked up.

what's done is done, and you'll just have to move on from there. just show that you did your best, and shine everywhere else.

it's a maxim you should adopt, especially if you come to hopkins and are an average student like myself.

OK, I HATE (yes HATE) Chances threads -- and almost always refrain from posting on them.

But please...please...please...understand that we take EVERYTHING into account when reviewing a student. Test scores do not say everything about an applicant. In addition, what you all think might be "GREAT" or "ABOVE AVERAGE" may not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee that way.

Here is my advice...
...Do your research about Hopkins. If you like the school then apply. If you love the school then apply ED. Put together the best application you can. Submit it and then cross your fingers. THAT IS ALL YOU CAN DO.

Stressing about things you can not control is not beneficial. Understand that the Admissions Committee at Hopkins does our job quite well -- we know how to read applications -- and we make the right decisions for the University. Why is Hopkins so great -- because of the students we admit. We know which ones will do amazing things here. We know about FIT.

Thats actually the one thing I love about JHU, "Test scores do not say everything about an applicant"

Right, Bill..that's what I meant when I put "/" for each section. Not that you would add up the total score from each 25% score.

Yeah, thank GOD for the holistic approach. My SAT scores were crap, and I'm here.

What were they?

If you have to ask, you're obviously not getting the point that SAT scores don't matter as much as you may think.

No, I understand. The thing that worries me, is the fact that I had a really low math score.

Everything else is good though:
IB Candidate: Most rigorous
3.3 (2.2 F, 4.0SJ) 2. 2 b/c of personal issues
+500 hours of CS
Great Recs, Great Essays
ED

Overall, I think I'm a pretty good candidate. But its that, okay, JHU is holistic- but the SAT stats show that a higher percentage of people had higher SAT scores. Those two facts are totally contradicting.
