Very, very non-traditional....

Hey, everyone! This is my first post here and my heart is beating with excitement as I go through the college admissions process! So here are my stats below!

Age: 26
Race: African-American / Latino
State of Residence: NJ
Current College: Mercer County Community College
Major: Business Administration

GPA: 4.0
Credits: Will have 62 at end of this semester – 24 came from AP courses although I’m not sending AP exam scores to colleges.
Standardized Test: Decent – but TOO OLD (10 years old) and opted not to send.

EC: Real Mentor for underprivileged youth in the city of Trenton, NJ – tutoring, life lessons, etc.; Phi Theta Kappa member, Hospital Volunteer,
Job: Computer Lab Supervisor for College

Financials: EXTREME POVERTY although EFC claims 1749, should go down to 0 after I explain special circumstance.

Schools I applied to:

Brown – Economics
Cornell – Applied Economics and Management
Amherst – Economics
Rider – Accounting / Fraud & Business Forensics (Already accepted into Business Honors Program)
Rutgers – Accounting
NJCU – Accounting (Accepted with Full Ride)

CHANCE ME! Love you guys!

Great GPA. Test scores would help since you only have a year or so worth of college classes and your ECs are a little bit weak. If you write a great essay about poverty/working through it, I think your chances will go up.

Brown: High Reach
Cornell: Reach
Amherst: High Reach
Rider: No idea what this place is
Rutgers: High Match/Low Reach

@Mandarinsin , thank you! Ironically, hat’s exactly what I did. Wrote about my passion for economics and accounting – proven by theorems, etc, etc. when it came to why I wanted to transfer and spoke about my career goals. My supplementary essays were about overcoming the psychological devastation of the passing of my mom junior year in HS and how I managed to get out of that slump, one was a comparison of the role of Will Smith in Pursuit of Happyness to me since he portrayed a guy with the same name as me and both came from a period of homelessness.

My recommendations were pretty awesome.

I should also include my current schedule:

Calc I Honors
Moral Choices
Business Statistics I
Principles of Microeconomics
Principles of Macroeconomics
Principles of Marketing
Computer Applications w/ Essentials

22 credits! – Most ever taken at the school at one time.

Honors college classes…? What…?
Also, what type of class is moral choices? Philosophy?

With good recs and such I think your chances will be good for at least one of those schools.

Yeah Calc I Honors is an honors course – we’re required to use calculus theorems to present a project at the end of the semester. Moral Choices is a philosophy course. And I hope so! I’m so nervous. It would be my DREAM to get in to Cornell, Brown or Amherst!

Cornell - Reach
Brown - Reach
Amherst - Reach
Rutgers - Match
Rider - Match

Not sure how the financial situation is but depending on the colleges’ offers and financial aid packages, it might better to go to somewhere local. Like Rider, Rutgers, or NJCU. They all are great schools with good programs.

@TheDidactic , that’s the thing! Those top colleges – Cornell, Brown and Amherst, they meet the full need of the applicant which is EXACTLY why I applied to them. I can’t afford anywhere really, and NJCU isn’t even accredited by the AACSB which is a big no-no for my major (Accounting). Even though I agree and acknowledge that they’re definitely reaches, do you think I have a chance?

I think you might have a chance. It’s really a reach for anyone so that’s the thing. You seem like you have a very unique situation so it might help but I can’t say.

Didn’t know that about the lack of accreditation. That is a no-no. Rutgers and Rider are still good choices.

I’m nervous…now I have to wait for 3 entire months to hear back from everyone. :frowning:

Good luck! Keep us updated!
