vespa scooters

sorry for the buggy previous threads.

I'm thikning of getting a vespa scooter, not only to get around campus faster but also to get home (40 miles away).

pros:
fuel efficiency (i heard it was 110 miles/ tank of gas)

cons:
theft

how do people deal with the theft issue? someone has already told me the vespas are the ones that are usually stolen. lock? what else? thanks

I've been thinking of getting a scooter too. I heard you can park them for free in the parking lots, can someone verify?

Yea, UCLA offers free parking to scooters and motorcycles

Also, do we need to get the M1 license to ride a scooter? A normal C-class license won't do right?

Be careful about riding a scooter in LA. How do you plan to ride 40 miles without getting on a freeway?

What license do I need to operate a motorscooter? | Ask Metafilter has some good info.

Yeah I definitely don't recommend riding 40 miles on a scooter (i.e. all on side streets). There are many more cons to scooters - they are much less safe than real motorcycles for several reasons. First, their small tires don't deal well with potholes or road debris, and make them inherently less stable and maneuverable. Second, they are way underpowered compared to motorcycles, making getting out of tough spots difficult.

Also - people seem to think that because they are slower, they don't have to wear protective gear on scooters. I routinely see girls on those things wearing brain bucket helmets, a tank top and sandals..... not good at all. Make sure you get a full helmet, motorcycle jacket and sturdy shoes.
