Hi! I’m currently enlisted in the Navy, and I’ll be separating soon. I was wondering if my status as a Veteran would increase my chances of being accepted to the University of Miami. It’s been my dream to attend this school since forever, but my GPA and SAT scores from high school didn’t support that dream unfortunately. I’ll be able to retake the SAT, but I won’t be able to redo high school, so I’m hoping that this could boost my chances. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I wish the Veteran’s forum was more active/

No one reasonable targets just one college, you need a list.
Being a vet should help your application in general. But not having academic qualifications will hurt. Do you meet the application requirements as far as your transcripts and courses? Eng 4, Math 4, Science 3, Foreign Language 2, Social Studies 3, History 2
What was your gpa? Is it terribly off or just a little. Over 70 pct of the class was in the top 10 pct and almost all are gpa 3.5+. They seem to say they are friendly to non traditional students though. The issue is can you do the work. More mature students are usually more focused and dedicated, but you maybe rusty and the question arises if you need remedial work they don’t offer like a public might.
As far as SAT goes, SAT is designed to be taken by high school students. I’m not sure if taking it later is looked at or not. I think that is something you could email about, given your situation.
Colleges are usually encouraging in general because they want your application and to see everything before they make a decision.
Is this program relevant to you?
BrownParent, I meet and exceed the high school requirements. My GPA was only a 3.0, so I’m sure that is terribly off. I’m currently taking classes while I’m enlisted, so I’m just going to transfer those credits over when I separate, so the rusty thing I don’t necessarily believe that would be a huge issue although the classes I’m currently enrolled in are online college courses.
collegemom3717, I’m unsure. I’ve never heard of this program before, I will definitely take a look into it.
So you will be a transfer then. So how many college credits do you have and what is that gpa? The more you have of solid gen eds and prereqs for major coursework you have the less your HS gpa and test scores are considered or even required. And now that you have started college I don’t think they want to see you retake the SAT. The transfer rate is not too bad, but I don’t know anything about the criteria. Read all the pages carefully.
