Veterans of California Community Colleges Give Us Advice!!!

Everyone; thanks for the advice.

SoCalBum

listen to Eschatos.....CC counselors are the most incompetent people on earth...my friend stayed in community college for 3 years because of them

If you're a student who has traditionally done bad at academics, I reccomend taking some time to think about what is causing the history behind it. Take care of any mental issues such as deppression and start working on them. If they were the main cause of them, you'll find school to be a lot easier than before.

Definately on WillDO's post. From my experience, non-academic circumstances are the main contributor to bad grades. I lived in really ugly areas (cheated the system and went to a nicer public school) and came home to my mom's abusive boyfriend all throughout high school. My grades were ****. I got out of that situation and my grades skyrocketed. Even now if something's got me down or I get in a fight with my gf, my short-term grades fall temporarily.

take "ratemyprofessor.com" rating with a grain of salt. if you take the easy route by taking courses form the easiest/most popular instructors, you could miss out on great courses from great prof. that are vital for transfer preparation. remember: not everyone on the ratings site is as motivated/hard working/intelligent as you and their rating may be simply a reflection of their inadequate prep for the course, not the instructor's teaching. dont be afraid to challenge yourself!

is it necessary to take hard classes

Honestly i never got why people took "hard classes". If your a poli sci major chemistry probably isnt your thing so avoid it. On your traansfer pattern find a class that fufils the tough classes area that sounds easy, get an A and be on you way.

For example instead of bio/chem/math I took the geology of natural disasters HEHE fufilled my requirment and got me into cal/la/ucsd

no "hard" classes are not necessary...just because a class is hard doesn't mean you learn more...I took a Physics I course which was insanely difficult...but I didn't learn jack **** cause I was so paranoid about my grade all the time...Physics II was ridiculously easy but I learned a lot....I actually remember most of the stuff from that class.

Hard classes => ******* professors whose sole goal in life is to fail students

i think hard classes help prepare you for the intensity of uc's. unless you plan on taking the easy road there aswell...

bump bump...
